In a remote-ish part of Gunma, the snake center is very interesting to visit. Foreign tourists will probably not want to visit, as it takes a while to get to, but it's fun. It's a little old, but you learn something, too.

I was really excited to visit this snake center but upon arriving it was obvious the place is falling apart. As a snake owner I know what's acceptable and what is not. And the living conditions here were not acceptable. There are weeks and weeks worth of feces sitting in the "habitats". Their water hasn't been cleaned in who knows... More

As a glimpse into the past this place is a gem. On visiting we found an all but abandoned Snake Zoo, almost like visiting Jurassic Park a year after the first film ends. The ticket booth was manned by a couple of older woman who were polite and directed us to use our ETC card to get a discount. We... More

Yes, this center does indeed have many many snakes. To be honest, the center is a little run-down and many of the snakes are in quite small, dull-looking enclosures. The most interesting thing to me was the large White Snake Kannon (Buddist goddess/Bodhisattva) statue, which you can see from the train-station.
