Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the best part of our 15 day trip. Sun sets early on November and we almost missed it. It was beautiful! No one wanted to leave till the last purple streak in the sky turned dark. The drive on the sandy beach was one special experience too. Sun set is not to be missed. Highly recommended.

I planned my trip so that I’d be here at sunset...gorgeous. The road is not paved but firm enough to drive/ride on, and there are dozens of people parked on the beach taking photos. I read somewhere that to park heavier motorcycles, you’d need to bring a block to place under the side stand, but for my roughly 200kg bike it was fine. (The tyres do sink in the sand a bit though). The road is open at night also.

Our cycle tour guide took us onto the beach, of which we were wary at first as bike tyres usually dig in to sand. But the sand was firm enough for tyres of about 35mm width. There were a couple of soft spots that needed skill to negotiate, but only one of our riders came off in about 5 kms that we were on the beach. Great experience.

Ever wondered what it is like to drive on a beach and hear the waves ringing in as your engine chugs along? Well, this a rare opportunity to have just that here!
Its not difficult to find the entrance to the beach, and once when you are there - the drive is beautiful. Stop whenever you feel the urge - park alongside the waves away from traffic - and you have the moment to yourself.
Drive on and find some huts on the side - the aunties here serve the freshest grilled clams. And if not driving, down a sake or two while at it. Just memorable.

There aren't too many places where you can drive on the beach. Having been to Daytona, it wasn't that big of a deal to us, but we did it as part of a day up the coast.

We were in Hakiu for business, but enjoyed beach-side beers and food. Camping at Chirihama beach (inquire at the lodge) is $5/person, $3/tent, and $10/ car. There is a huge sento close-by (Euphoria) open 10am-10p

Unique, free, exhilarating. A great atmosphere and a revalation that Japanese know how to chill out. Pull over, put another prawn on the bbq. Public drinking is encouraged....kind of. A blast and an experience everyone needs to balance out our opinion of what Japan is like.

The rain was bucketing down when my wife and I took the exit to the Chirihama Beach Drive. With the rain coming in sheets and the surf heavy, driving on the beach was a completely magical experience. I had expected that the beach drive would be prohibited during heavy weather, but it was not — we enjoyed solitude on the beach as we passed the thundering waves and listened to the rain on the roof of our car. I let the tires wade in the seawater on the strand. Just so beautiful and something a visitor to should never miss!

We visited here on a countryside tour from Kanazawa to Noto. A drive along the beach, pleasant enough, but not much to see other than the Japan Sea, lots of rubbish washed up on the sand. A few shops but nothing was open.

Is the sand firm enough for MPV like Honda Odyssey / Toyota Estima? Would an MPV be stuck?

I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the car. The first time I went here was on a high school field trip... on a full-size tour bus that weighed at least 10 tons.

Is it possible to rent a bicycle nearby? Seems like biking would be a lot of fun

JR Hakui station (to the north) has rental bicycles, 1000 yen/day for a standard bike and 1200/day for one with electric assist (since it's a JR station it should be easily accessible).
Chirihama rest house on the beach (about 1.5 km from Hakui station) rents beach cruisers.
