Bringing your dog is fine.

However, the stone steps are quite high, so if your dog isn't good at climbing, it's best to hold him.

So it's better to bring less luggage lol

The parking lot gets busy, so it's best to go early during peak seasons.

Make sure to buy some Tengu Senbei rice crackers on your way back!!

I went there today and plan to go again and again . Less people but full with forest among the walk from Daiyuuzan station . Take about 40 mins by foot to the gate of daiyuuzan temple 最乘寺. I no recommend to take bus if u like to walk under the forest unless raining days or hot and humidity weather .
Sure u love it . Do u like 苔庭moss- covered garden or forest ? Then please take a walk in the morning among that forest before u able to enter the gate of the temple .u will hear birds voice and gentle breeze of forest . I recommend here compare takaosan高尾山. Want to enjoy Japanese Buddhist meals on lunch . Pls order it by email or call in to temple 2 weeks in advance (5 ppl and above).1500 yen onward u may try Japanese shoujin精進料理 meals ( Japanese vegetarian menu in temple). There are few type of menu can select . 1500. ,2000,3000,5000 yen menu for lunch . You may ask for temple stay if u have 10 ppl in group . Make reservation in one month advance by email , fax or call in . (one night and two meals included)
I experience meditation here from 1:00-4:00pm include tea and little snack . Wear properly , ladies prepare pant or any cover your skin/ body coz that is temple . Not sure got explanation in English or not coz I understand Japanese language . Every second and fourth week of Sunday , u are welcome to register for meditation . Register at the reception area at 12:30 pm . U may come early to get more detail on it coz if monk got time may explain how to do meditation to u directly before start .No words is need so u just follow what the senior of meditation doing . Today monk for meditation in business trip to other temple so we make three time seat meditation 40 mins each , walk meditation 5 mins , and abt 30 mins in recite a sutra .15 mins in between is for rest ( tea/ snack/ washroom). Hope u enjoy your journey here .

In the Odawara area, there are many historic temples and shrines — unfortunately, modern, ill-designed concrete buildings now surround many of these traditional structures. Nearby, by contrast, the large hillside temple complex of Daiyūzan Saijōji (大雄山最乗寺) lies in harmony with nature within a forest of towering Japanese cedar trees.

From the Odawara Railway Station, a 10 km ride on the Izu-Hakone Daiyūzan Line ends at the Daiyūzan Station at Minamiashigara, and from there it is just a short bus ride to the Daiyūzan Saijōji temple. In addition to the mature cedar trees, the temple grounds are a landscaped blend of natural plants and expertly-pruned bushes — in the springtime, weeping cherry, azalea and wisteria provide color; in June-July, thousands of hydrangea bushes flower along the tree-shaded entrance driveway; in late autumn, scarlet Japanese maple trees provide a strong contrast to the dark green evergreens.

The sights and history of the Daiyūzan Saijōji complex are detailed in the temple’s own Japanese web site. At the temple, the main office offers an English-language pamphlet for Western visitors on request — すみません が、英語のパンフレット。。。。phonetically: SUE-ME-MA-SEN GAH, EEH-GO NO PAN-FU-RAY-TOE ? (with a marked pause after SUE-ME-MA-SEN GAH). Literally: Excuse me but, English pamphlet? …….

Visited this spring on a rainy, misty day, with a very special friend. It was very peaceful and quiet, loved it.

Daiyuzan Saijo-ji is a breathtaking Buddhist temple that was built more than 615 years ago. Although it is still frequented by devout worshipers from all across Japan, it remains one of the less talked about magnificent places in Kanagawa Prefecture. This is probably due to the fact that Daiyuzan Saijo-ji is obscurely located in the mountain forests of Odawara's Hakone - but trust me, that's all the more reason you should visit. No matter how many times I go, it remains one of the most impressive places I've ever been to.

This was my second visit here. Last visit was for see beautiful autumn leaves which was of course so good.
Highlight on this visit was steps to the top, feel like stepping up to sky... Very fresh air in holistic ambiance! Nothing to say.

今回は2回目の訪問です。前回は紅葉の時期に来て、それはとても綺麗でしたが、今回は、奥にある階段、まるで空に向かって登っていく感じ。厳かな雰囲気で、新鮮な空気。最高です。

If you don't have a car there's lots of climbing to be done to get to this temple.
The first bus from daiyuzan is at 7:45 or so. We reached there at 6:30 and decided to walk up. Its quite a walk and all uphill. Even from the bus stop it's quite a while up. Car I the best way to get there. Maybe even a taxi for 1200—1450 will be worth it. The bus costs 270. But whatever you do, however you go, you MUST go to this temple. Its beyond words how beautifully in the lap of nature it is.
The massive cedar trees.. The sound of water everywhere, the peaceful quiet surroundings... The birds and insects and cobwebs that you walk into.. You realise how tucked away into another world you are when you are here. I could sit there for hours. Its really an experience close to nature and nothing like what you experience in the cities or hakone or anywhere else..

I recently visited Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple with my wife on a day where our children were with their grandparents, and both my wife Yuko and I immediately felt a peacefulness well over us unlike anything we have felt in the years we have been here.

The landscape of the buildings and the stone walkways and stairs blended in with the massive cedars and Japanese maples in complete harmony. I felt calm and uplifted. The sounds of nature filled the air.

I have seen a lot of Temples and Shrines in Japan and this one is by far the most relaxed and beautiful of them all. I am sure there are other Temples in Japan that offer the same beauty and feeling, but they aren't that easy to get to from Tokyo or Kanagawa and they are usually super crowded.

I recommend an early morning or afternoon trip to this place and just enjoy walking around the grounds and absorb the tranquility without feeling rushed.

Shane.

W stayed at the Canadian house Airbnb and caught the bus up the hill to the temple.
I have seen mant beautiful places on my travels and this was stunning. Away from the main temple we were the only people there. My favourite day in Japan.

The temple complex was one of the most impressive we’ve seen in Japan.

It’s situated in nature so it’s a really amazing peaceful place to spend the afternoon.

We hiked to the temple from Daiyuzan town and it is a bit of climb but we did take a nice rewarding soak at the onsen close by after and took the onsen bus back to the town. There’s also an option to take the public bus there and back.
