From Hiroshima Station, you take the train back to Mihara Station. From Mihara, you take the bus to the port when you get on the ferry to the Rabbit Island.
All the rabbits are free and, we can feed them with rabbits snacks (bought it before at the port) and rabbits will come to you, they were familiar with humans. What a great experience

When we got here all was great, bunnies are cute and jump all over you blah blah. Then you start hearing how many are constantly sneezing and then a few come up to you with their eyes straight rotting out of their head and suddenly the bubble is burst and this is no longer a fairytale. It’s incredibly sad. The bunnies need help.

Manage your expectations by watching the latest YouTube clips. There are plentiful rabbits on the island but not an Army of them like those on the old YouTube clips. In summer, 0600 to 0700hrs are the BEST feeding times. They are hungry, they are out for food!!! Evening from 1800-1900hrs is okay too. Any other times, good luck.

As i have a rabbit myself, I couldn't give up the opportunity to visit rabbit island. Its a relatively small island which i covered on foot in less than half a day, stopping to feed hordes of rabbits along the way. If you look close enough, you will notice some of the rabbits have infections or battle scars. Overall a fun experience for animal lover.

The island would be worth visiting even without the rabbits. Such an interesting history and a beautiful surrounding landscape away from the hustle and bustle. We walked the whole island at a slow pace and found a beautiful spot for lunch. The rabbits seemed to love the pellet food we bought at the ferry terminal too, as we missed the chance for the supermarket down the street for something more substantial. But upon returning to the terminal with the bags I received a free rabbit postcard. No matter where you walked, they would run out from no where to say hello. Amazing day I will not soon forget.

As somebody who is obsessed with bunnies this island was a must go. There were so many adorable bunnies to feed and they were very cute. I wish I could go back. There are some sneezing bunnies though, so make sure to feed them.

I and my wife love bunnies. We have bought 2.5kg of bunnies food at local supermarket to take to the island. There were many bunnies there but the food was enough. Besides the bunnies all the time seek us there to get food. They were so cute.

Okunoshima was introduced by CNN and Times as the bunnies’ island in Feb, 2014, but they did not inform the directions to this island. Some of the tourists seemed to get frustrated, so I am writing it down.
We have to cross the sea from Tadanoumi port to Okunoshima by ferry. The round trip charge is 620 JPY. You can buy it at the ticket shop nearby Tadanoumi port. It is the short cruise of 12 minutes and the time table is as follows;
Bound for Okunoshima: 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 19:05
Bound for Tadanoumi port: 9:13, 10:13, 12:13, 14:13, 15:13, 16:13
This is the popular plan for Okunoshima from Hiroshima station.
Hiroshima Station (9:07) – Mihara Station (9:35) by bullet train, Kodama 732
Mihara Station (9:42) – Tadanoumi station (10:03) by local train bound for Hiro (Kure line)
Tadanoumi station – Tadanoumi port, it is a-10 minute walk.
Tadanoumi port (10:30) – Okunoshima port (10:42) by ferry
In order to go back to Hiroshima city;
Okunoshima port (16:13) – Tadanoumi Port (16:25) by ferry
Okunoshima station (17:12) – Mihara station (17:35) by local train (Kure line)
Mihara station (17:42) – Hiroshima station (18:05) by bullet train, Kodama 747
The free transportation bus to the public hotel is waiting at the pier. In case that you want to walk, it is a-15 minute walk to the hotel in a clockwise manner, or a 40-minute walk by a counter clockwise direction. The restaurant and the spa are in the hotel. If you forget about bringing the food for cute bunnies with you, you can buy pellets at the shop in the hotel.
For your referrence, this island was removed from the map during WWII because there were the military facilities. As it is now, some of those facilities can be seen as the ruin and there is the free museum to explain them.

Access and transportation to Okunoshima island
1. Get off the train at JR Tadanoumi station (忠海駅), about 30 minutes from JR Hiroshima station
2. From JR Tadanoumi to Tadaoumi ferry pier, at the exit of the JR station, turn right and walk about 10 minutes until finding the bridge, then turn right at the junction before the bridge.
3. Walk 1 minute until you cross the railway, on the right hand side, there is a 2 storey ivory house with the sign "Minato Oasis Tadanoumi" where ferry tickets are sold. (620 yen for round trip, 12-15 minutes)

Tips
1. If you forget to bring food for the rabbits, you can buy at Family Mart, next to JR Tadanoumi station (food pellets or fresh vegetable cost 100 yen per pack) or you can buy at the shop in the hotel on the island (a free shuttle bus to the hotel is waiting at the pier when the ferry arrives). However, I suggest you to buy from Family Mart, then you will have more time to play with the rabbits.
2. Few toilets and restaurants around Okunoshima pier.
3. I spent an hour on playing with rabbits. If you want to see the rest of the island, such as museum, you should spend at lest 2 hours on the island.
4. Some people brought their bicycles to travel around the island.

Yes, there are packs of feral bunnies that will climb all over you and eat out of your hands. And there're some random ruins of chemical weapons plants. It's certainly worth a full day of exploration if you're into either or both of those things. Doesn't hurt that the hotel on the island is decently run and has good food.
Getting there isn't terribly tricky; Google Maps has most of the details, but take the train to the ferry (it's about half-dozen or so stops on the local off the Shinkansen). Walk out of the station and turn right, then take the first street right to the port. The ticket booth for the ferry is the first door to your right as you're walking down the street toward the docks.

Hi everyone! I'm planning to travel to rabbit island but I'm not sure where to temporarily store our luggage. Are there lockers for luggage storage at Tadanoumi Station? Many thanks!
Written 14 October 2022
I do not think that this is possible. The island has only hotel, and some establishments which are served from the mainland. The ferries can take and drop vehicles, but I am not sure if tourists are allowed to get their own vehicles along. The public transportation is a regular bus service, which is quite regular and efficient.

Hello! Planning to come here in June; so excited! Would it be doable to visit this island for a few hours then head to Miyajima after? Any suggestions? Thank you!
Written 14 April 2019
Hello, while you may be able to do it, I would not advise you in favour of this idea. Both Okunoshima Island and Miyajima island typically take about a day each, to do justice to the sights around. I presume that your base will be at Hiroshima. The quick and cost-effective way will be to go in for a train on the Sanyo line. (The quickest of course, is the Shinkansen). Hiroshima to Mihara on the Sanyo line sees connections every half-an-hour or so (locals for Itozaki). However, the Mihara to Tadanoumi segment on the Kure line does not see very frequent trains. You will have to check the schedule for convenient connections. (The hyperdia app could be a big help for you to plan this trip out). Once you are at Tadanoumi port, please check the ferry timings. The same will apply on the way back. Miyajima on the other hand, is closer, and can be reached in a far easier manner. There is a water route form the Hiroshima city, close to the Genbaku Dome (the A-Bomb dome). The other option (which we patronised) are the trains to Iwakuni/Wake, which are quite frequent. All the best!

Written 18 March 2019
hi.
My friends and I are coming to Japan at the end of this week (Nov 18) We are thinking of riding the train from Tokyo (JR) and ferry to the island for Nov 20. Is it still a good time to visit the bunny and feed them or are they all hibernating now and not worth the trip b/c of the weather?
Any tips on getting from Tokyo to the island is greatly appreciated. 3rd trip to Tokyo but never went out side of the city before this trip. Using google map to figure out the route and planning.
Written 13 November 2018
Hello,
I hope your trip went well. I traveled to Hiroshima by overnight highway bus from Yokohama. You could do the same thing from Shinjuku or Tokyo station. You can also take a shinkansen. From there, you have to travel to Takehara by bus. This is about an hour ride. From Takehara to Tadanouma is another 20 minute or so bus ride. This summer the trains in the area were out of service. I am not sure if that is still the case.

What is the cheapest way to get to Rabbit Island from Hiroshima city? I know I can get there by JR train but is there a cheaper way?
Written 6 September 2018
We drove there. If you are in a group of 5, you might consider car rental.
There should be bus too but might to another port.

We will be going to rabbit island (Okunoshima) during the third week of November. I’ve read that it’s best to get there early in the day. What time does that mean? Before Noon? Also how long did you stay there? Thank you
Written 13 August 2018
I think is it best to get to the island around 10 a.m. Not too early but not late either. I heard the rabbits are active in the morning. So you get to enjoy taking photos of them when feeding them. You get to walk around the island and visit historical sites. Try to get to the ferry before
4 p.m. It will be cold in late November in Okunoshima so make sure to keep yourselves warm.
Hope the weather will be lovely when you visit Okunoshima. Have a nice trip.

How many hours would you recommend to tour this island?
Written 4 August 2018
We stayed for about 20 hours from late afternoon till noon the next day. If you like feeding friendly bunnies and walking through woods on a lovely island it is well worth staying overnight at the hotel there. My 26 year old son , husband and I actually felt we would have enjoyed another night . It was relaxing and the food at the hotel was varied, plentiful and good. There are many things and places to see in Japan so that limited our time on the island. The hotel was not plush but it was comfortable.
