Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Modern temple by Tadao Ando ...
On one hand it's quite remote in style from the traditional temple at the entrance, on the other hand it does capture the quietness and play of dark and light of traditional temples.
It is best to come here early (9 AM) after rainy days so you may have the best time for the lotus flowers on the pond that form the roof of the temple.
Behind the bus parking (left if you leave the temple) there are a few more ponds with lotusplants and a nice view towards the hills beyond.
On the other hand there is a nice effect of the sunlight pouring in behind the buddha-statues in the main hall..around 2 PM

400 access fee seems a bit exagerated (at least compared with Sumoto castle) but well...

Loved the architecture by Tadao Ando - his use of stone, concrete, water, colour. A visual delight. Well worth visiting if you are on Awaji.

This is a different temple, designed by Ando. The concrete and vermillion-colored woodwork are unusual materials, and the design. including the meandering entrance and position under a lotus pond, is unusual. But I for one, was not moved. To each his own, I guess.

Been wanting to see this temple for years. Arrived and met a travelling group of acrobats and performance artists hanging out around the lotus pond area, striking poses and taking pictures of themselves. Once they left, the quiet and meditative atmosphere of the temple was restored. People come, stay five minutes and leave. But his place deserves more. It is for meditation and listening to the wind and viewing the sea. A delightful place, if the tourists leave it alone.

It’s called the watertemple. This modern temple, an addition to an excistent classical temple, is an place to be silent, to contemplate and to enjoy the brilliance of Tadao Ando.
Worth the travel from Kobe. You can reach it from Shin Kobe and Sannomiya station Kobe by bus. From Sannomiya bus no 4 to Awaji, get out at Oiso port, then walk for 10-15 minutes.

This temple is attached to an old existing temple and has an unusual effect. you are standind looking at the reflection of the bamboo and adjoining neighborhood in the water and below this image is a temple; much like other temples in Japan, but this one is hidden from site by water above. you enter thru a tunnel going down through the center of the pool. Sort of haunting. I liked the whole idea and feeling.

Stunning rouge interior design was found when you got near to the Shrine. And the electrical heated incense amused me while I was doing my prayer, soothing smell and peace environment with. A remarkable visit, the architectural design appeared elegantly before my eyes. It would be much worth to pay a visit in summer again for the lotus pool blossoms in Jul to Aug.

Just one advise raised due to my poor knowledge of transportation to this spot. Do Not Trust Google Map by saying that you can reach the spot by 20 minutes walk after you arrived Awaji Yumebutai Hotel. Just don't. It was exactly 20 minutes bus journey plus 10 mins walk after dropping off the bus to there. If you walk, I doubt you can reach the Temple in 50 minutes walk. Check the timetable of buses and plan well before you go, otherwise you would get a harsh hit esp during Mercury Retrograde like what I suffered from - ie waited buses for an hour under extreme chill weather and rain.

Amazing architecture again by Tadao Ando - you will take lots of pictures trust me! To visit the inside of the temple costs 400 yen, but the essence really is in the exterior.

Ando is famous to play with your perception, his architecture always has the surprise element and this one does it to the max. You entered through the entrance not expecting much, then the pond emerged into your view, and then the stair case tasked you in to the middle of the pond underground to the temple. Sublime!

Unusual and beautiful water temple designed by Tadao Ando. A very peaceful and serene complex, beautiful water lillies flowering in the water. To enter the temple you go down a flight of stairs in the middle of the circle of water. You have to pay to enter the temple which is a red wooden circular structure.
