The island was a bit of a trek from Sendai and definitely needed research the night before as train and ferry times are few and far between. The cats were not in abundance as suggested by the YouTube videos you many have seen but this was none the less an excellent cat based adventure. I would suggest bringing as many... More

Had a marvellous day (yesterday) at the cat island. It was badly affected by the tsunami/earthquake and many buildings are abandoned. The cats live in harmony amongst locals and are well fed. We stumbled across a whole house filled with cat food and beds. We saw one kitty with health problems but otherwise all were well. Besides the cats, the... More

Unfortunately, there are not as many cats as you'd expect. I saw them scattered by themselves throughout the island, but the biggest grouping I saw was about 10. I think the construction at the dock ferry port scared them and scattered them throughout the island. However, I loved the cat shrine. And this does give you a very authentic look... More

It's not difficult to get to the island, only 50 minutes from Sendai to Ishinomaki by train and 45 minutes from Ishinomaki port to the island by ferry. There are two villages on the island, Ohdomari and Nitoda. The ferry reached Ohdomari 15 minutes before Natoda. Most people get off at Nitoda because it had more cats. Right after we... More

Ok you'll love this place if you are a total cat lover. There are lots and lots of cats. I recommend you wear sneakers or flats since there's a major hiking trail for you to walk around and enjoy the whole island. The only two downsides of this place are : the ferry only runs 2-3 times a day to... More

The island seems to attract two types of visitors - the true cat lovers who visits the island to feed the cats, and the cat lover who just wants to look at the cats and take photos of them. I belong to the second group and was a little disappointed by the number of cats. Articles of this island report... More

Just got off the ferry after a day of feeding the stray cats. I researched this island & flew to Sendai from Tokyo just to see the cats. One hour taxi from Sendai to the Ishinomaki ferry then a 45 minute ferry ride to the island. A lot of planning & money to feed stray cats but I wasn't disappointed.... More

So we went to the island solely for the cats and weren't disappointed. We did a round trip walk from one port to the next (two on the island) and there are loads of cats. I took some food, others some treats. The cat shrine is cute. Bring your food and the portable toilets are only at each port. The... More

Trip to Tashiro Island is one of my best travel experience. It took longer time to reach the island than to visit the island itself but it's worth. The cats are not domestic but still so sweet. They approach anybody who brings food but don't feed them, otherwise you may witness some cat-fight.
