It is a quaint traditional theme park and not crowded. While the journey there is long, the time taken was worth it as the kids enjoyed themselves very much. Not the usual Universal Studios or Disney theme parks but plenty of thrills and easy rides for the kids.

As many have said, go during the week. No lines to speak of.
Many rides have minimum height restrictions, so a 3 yr old may be too short for all of the rides. Lots of rides for the kids and adults. All are 'mild' if you're comparing it to Six Flags, but enjoyable nonetheless. To access from the train station (arrived from Kyoto) - walk straight ahead, take the first right and its directly in front of you, about a 60 yd walk. Easy.
I'd avoid the 'snack shop' across the Mouse / Log ride. Nothing good there. They have better food at the street down by the kiddie rides (go right from the entrance area). McDonalds and other choices.
Purchase the Keihan Sightseeing Pass for Hirakata Park - all day rides on their railway + admission for 1,000Y (vs 1400Y). Also discount on the 'all access' pass (2700Y vs 3000Y). You can only exchange prepurchased vouchers at the Keihan Stations. To purchase the pass in Kyoto, you need to go to Kyoto Station, where its sold in about 4 places, but all in the same small area.

We skipped the crowds at Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios in favor of this local amusement park. We visited on a weekday in November - so - no lines! We were able to ride some fun (not too scary) roller coasters, went to a couple of short moves in the 4D theater (they rotate several times/ day), a few fun games where you can earn "points" and prizes (unique / different than ones in American amusement parks). Accessible by local train from Osaka/ Kyoto with only a 10 minute walk from the train station. Worth it to purchase the all access wrist band.

My husband was not keen on going to this park because it takes about an hour to travel there, besides he felt that we have just gone to Tokyo Disneyland.

Nevertheless, we were in for a pleasant surprise as the park had lots of rides, especially for kids. Most importantly there was no queue as compared to Disneyland and hence you can virtually sit the same ride again and again without waiting. They also have multiple types of roller coasters for those with older children.

Definitely worthwhile if you have kids! Both children loved it much and changed my husband’s opinion too.

We went to Hirakata as a less crowded and less expensive alternative to some of the larger amusement parks in the area. We really enjoyed ourselves! The all day pass is a deal if you plan to ride the full day. There are some unusual attractions, such as the giant refrigerator and freezer and the Legend of Luxor, but also rollercoasters, a giant drop, 4D movies and more.

They rented us a stroller (referred to as a "baby car") all day for just 500 yen and 1500 yen deposit in guest services. Never any long lines and the food is affordable.

Highly recommend for a family during a visit to Osaka or Kyoto!

We went during the week and there were no crowds. At all. We were always the first on a ride and were able to stay on a few rides to go again. Only one ride, despite there being no one waiting, we were made to exit the ride and walk around to the entry again, which was the same opening as the exit. Lol. We figured he had been working there for 40 years, that's how he was taught and that's how he did it. Lol.
The only negative thing was that the big coaster was closed.
Oh. The rust on all the rides really added to the fear lol.

Visited the theme park on a Sunday. It was filled with many local visitors. Queue to popular rides were quite long & we waited an average of about 15mins per ride. There were many rides for younger children. It was a pity that the water theme park wasn’t open.

We opted to go to Hirakata instead of Universal because we heard of some of the horrendous wait times at Universal. This was a great decision and an unforgettable experience. Park is in a small town that is about a half hour train ride outside of Osaka. Park appears to be frequented mostly by Japanese locals and there appeared to be few tourists. Although it lacked the newest, most daring rides, the rides were exciting enough to keep our family entertained for the entire day. There are a few roller coasters, carnival type rides, a log ride and adventure area. The lines were not bad and most of the rids had a 5 minute or less wait (some of the roller coasters were about 20-30 minutes). Our 6 year old and 9 year old didn't want to leave at the end of the day! There eateries are also decent and affordable compared to other amusement parks. The park offers an admission only ticket which gets you admission to the park and then you pay for each ride individually as you go, or there is also an all inclusive option where they give you a wristband for unlimited rides. Go for the all inclusive package.

The only negative comment that I have is that the height requirements for some of the rides seem a bit conservative. Our 6 year old is very small, but is daring and can ride almost all of the rides in U.S. theme parks no problem, but he was about an inch shy of being able to ride some of the roller coasters at Hirakata. He still had fun riding the other rides, but it would have been great if he could ride the roller coasters with his older sister. On the flip side, since he is small, he can pass as a 5 year old so we paid less for his admission. So no real complaints here. Will definetly return and will tell friends to visit this park before they visit Universal.

This place has been there since I was young kid. I remember my parents used to bring me and sisters. It had changed a lot since then. I'd still visit with families. You can spend all day there.

Hirakata Park is probably overshadowed by USJ as a destination. But for families with young kids (mine are 4 and 5), Hirakata is probably a better option as there are many many rides that young kids can sit. We went on a Friday and there weren't many people - we didn't have to queue for any rides except to wait for the current run to finish. Which also meant we could take multiple rides multiple times. The staff there were fantastic - every one was so polite and smiley and helpful! It was really lovely! There are so many rides suitable for kids of all ages. Unfortunately for us, the wooden roller coaster was under maintenance :( overall it was a really nice, old-school style amusement park. We had lunch within the park at the omurice restaurant. It was pretty delicious! We left when the park closed at 5pm, having been there the whole day :) it was enjoyable for everyone and the kids completely knackered after that.
Tip: you can purchase a Hirapah Go! Go! card from most stations along the Keihan line (which goes to Hirakata-koen station). The card covers the park entry and unlimited rides on the Keihan line for that day. With they card, you also get a discount on the all access pass (2,700 yen instead of 3,000 yen). So this is something that is definitely worthwhile.
