We went there literally because of Hikonyan. It was a quiet, beautiful, local place. Great view of Lake Biwa from the top of the castle. Great place to relax. On the way uphill, we stopped at a tea house, where we were served local japanese confectionery together with freshly brewed green tea in a traditional style. There were two other... More

We decided to spend several hours in Hikone during our stay in busy Kyoto and were so glad we did. It is about an hour by train from Kyoto and another opportunity to use our JR train pass. The information office at Hikone station were very helpful and gave us a lot of helpful information and maps about the castle... More

It was baking hot in August so we didn't see everything but would definitely spend at least a full day here if not 2. Castle not quite like Himeji but grounds were lovely.

This is a must visit! Amazing amazing amazing. The walk up the street to the castle is lined with shops selling things like green tea ice cream, paper fans, bamboo boxes, Japanese knives swords, clothing etc most of the ladies wear traditional costume it is just an awesome place to see.

We were staying overnight in Hikone before heading to Kyoto, and initially had no intention of touring around. However, when we realized our proximity to the castle, we figured it was worth a morning walk. The experience was a treat, more so than the setting. At daybreak ~6AM, townspeople head up the castle hill for morning calisthenics. The ticket booths... More

Castle, Japan history, really nice restored Shogun quarters with fantastic craftsmanship. Nice museum with enough English to keep you interested and the palace has some unique defensive architecture. What I could not discern is how a single flaming arrow wouldn't take threw hole place down. Also, could not discern age of the Edo house. Is it 1950s restored it original?

I have been to a few castles in Japan by now. Personally feel a little underwhelmed by this castle, aside from the great views. - Location: really close to train station, easy to get to in that sense. also, just an hour away from kyoto/Osaka, makes an easy day trip if you don't intend to stay there. - Size: In... Some of the reviews here tend to downplay the climb to the castle, so I felt obligated to add my two cents. The castle itself is beautiful, and the view from it is gorgeous, but getting to it might be too much for some. It's on top of a hill, but instead of having a path leading up to it,... More

I loved this castle in Hikone, I visited during sakura time and there where a lot of blossom as usual in Japan. Also the short walk to arrive at the castle from the station is very nice and I really really loved Hikonian the manga of the castle. It's a perfect half day trip from Kyoto or you can visit... I really loved my visit at Hikone Castle. Surrounded by a beautiful park, the Castle provides beautiful views over Hikone and over to Lake Biwa. You will need to walk some steps uphill though :-)
