Over 700 reviews in English give you a good idea what to expect. Most people point out that there is a lot of climbing to do, and that it lacks modern comfort like airconditioning. My quick reading did not show me the reason for this : Japan has hundreds of castles all scattered throughout the country. Most of them where... More

For those who love historical site, castles and gardens, this attraction is perfect. Not many tourists during our visit, and our family had a really great time in the snowy Genkyuen garden. Lots of walking and hiking , wearing comfortable shoes is recommended. Also, you have to remove your shoes before entering the building.

This Castle is in a large Garden, there are great views of Lake Biwa to be had from the top. Nice place to spend a couple of hours, take a map because I got lost several times and some of the roads are very uneven.

What a beautiful castle and beautiful grounds! The grounds were just amazing! So peaceful and quiet, and not too crowded. There is a lot of walking here, including many uneven steps both up and down. It is a little tough, but it's worth it when you get to the top. The castle tour was lovely (Watch out for the steep... More

This is a great castle and grounds. It is a very pleasant but steepish stroll up to the castle and if that taxes you I would not recommend trying to enter and climb to the top of the castle. You remove your shoes and the internal stairs have narrow steps for western feet which are extremely steep especially for the... More

We went there literally because of Hikonyan. It was a quiet, beautiful, local place. Great view of Lake Biwa from the top of the castle. Great place to relax. On the way uphill, we stopped at a tea house, where we were served local japanese confectionery together with freshly brewed green tea in a traditional style. There were two other... More

We decided to spend several hours in Hikone during our stay in busy Kyoto and were so glad we did. It is about an hour by train from Kyoto and another opportunity to use our JR train pass. The information office at Hikone station were very helpful and gave us a lot of helpful information and maps about the castle... More

It was baking hot in August so we didn't see everything but would definitely spend at least a full day here if not 2. Castle not quite like Himeji but grounds were lovely.

This is a must visit! Amazing amazing amazing. The walk up the street to the castle is lined with shops selling things like green tea ice cream, paper fans, bamboo boxes, Japanese knives swords, clothing etc most of the ladies wear traditional costume it is just an awesome place to see.

We were staying overnight in Hikone before heading to Kyoto, and initially had no intention of touring around. However, when we realized our proximity to the castle, we figured it was worth a morning walk. The experience was a treat, more so than the setting. At daybreak ~6AM, townspeople head up the castle hill for morning calisthenics. The ticket booths... More
