ご本尊の重文「十一面観音立像」は秘仏であり、通常は４９年に１度のご開帳ですが、途中、２５年に１度「中開帳」があり、次回は平成２９年が中開帳に当たります。特別拝観は１４日前までにＦＡＸで同寺へ通知する必要があります。通常、１０名以上３０名以内の団体拝観が主流らしいです。この寺院には本尊の他にも国の重文指定を受けている「木ノ中地蔵菩薩」があります。観光寺ではありませんが観音巡礼の地として有名で、元より、地元の近江八幡市では聖徳太子に因む伝承と共に信仰を集めており、当初は八幡山（比牟礼山）の麓にあったものを豊臣秀次が八幡城を築城する際に同市の鷹飼村（現鷹飼町）に移築され、その後に現在の「京街道」の突き当たり地点（日杉山）に移されたそうです。近江八幡市は「条里制の町」でもあり道に迷うこともなく行き着けます。寺院の縁起等はネット上にも公開されていますので略しますが、広大な境内には四国八十八か所巡礼霊場コースが設けられており山内だけで約１時間３０分で四国八十八ヵ所をお砂踏で巡礼出来るため毎月、篤信者による巡礼が実施されています。このこともあり市民の手軽な信仰の対象にもなっています。３年ほど先になりますが秘仏のご本尊の中開帳にも是非とも参拝したい隠れた名刹でもあります。なお、寺院の正式名称は「日杉山普門院願成就寺」といいます。

建築家ヴォーリズの建築を訪ねて近江八幡を歩いた際、こちらに立ち寄りました。なんと１日前に、４９年に１度といわれる秘仏の十一面観世音菩薩（平安後期）を特別公開があったと知り、愕然としました。このお寺は、近江に４８の寺を建立した聖徳太子が最後に建てたものだそうで、「願いが成就」したことで、この寺名になったらしいです。「京街道門前通り」の西の端の山の上にあります。不覚でした！

階段の登り口にパワースポットの横断幕があったので、興味を覚えて行ってみました。とても蚊がたくさん飛んでいたので、早々に帰りました。

秘仏の開帳や法要などのイベントがない限りは、全く人の気配の無い静かなお寺です。無料で本堂まで入って仏様を拝むことができます。階段は疲れます
