This is a must-see tourist spot when walking around Omihachiman, located in front of the Shirakumo Bridge of Hachimanbori and the Torii of Himure Hachimangu Shrine. This was the meeting place for the special guided tour of the Nishikawa Jingoro Residence, held from October 19th to 23rd, and we were given an explanation about this place at the beginning. What made an impression on me was that this place was built with the enthusiasm and cooperation of Omi merchants and residents as a place of education for the descendants of the residents. Moreover, when the school opened in 1877, there were 115 boys and 117 girls, so there were many women, even though there were various backgrounds. According to the guide, in merchants' houses, men often went out, so the women who were there to look after them had to be strong, and for that reason they were also enthusiastic about educating women. Also, from the second floor, the view of Mt. Hachiman that can be seen beyond the torii gate of Himure Hachimangu Shrine is something that can only be seen in Omihachiman. I stopped by on my way to explore the townscape of Omihachiman. It is located in front of the torii of Hachiman-sama. It's a tourist hub, a symbolic building.

In 1877, Omi merchants raised donations to build the school as Yahata Higashi School for the education of their children. It is a quaint historical building and currently serves as a tourist information center.

八幡堀の近くにある洋風建築。元々は学校として建てられたが、その後役場や信用金庫としても使われたらしい。ヴォーリズの手になるものではないが、近江八幡の象徴的建造物のひとつ。
