Tripadvisorās approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

From Imazu or from Nagahama, you can take a boat to Chikubushima. The travel takes some 30 minutes and the return boat is set after about one hour. The island is not very big, and one hour is enough time to walk around. There is a temple, dedicated to Benzaiten, and a Shinto shrine, which is designated as a national treasure, and so on. It is absolutely worth going a half day excursion.

The Chinese character, xuan, has a profound meaning of the root of all things. In some primitive religions, the rocks, hills, or islets which had the shape of the character used to be believed to be the root of all things, or to be what gave birth to all things. Later, in East Asia, some of them were related to Sazu, and, in Japan, a few of them were related to Benzaiten. The Three Great Shrines of Benzaiten contains Itsuku-shima in Hiroshima Prefecture, Eno-shima in Kanagawa Prefecture, and Chikubu-shima in Shiga Prefecture.
From Imazu Port in the Kohoku area, I ferried to Chikubu-shima Island. As the boat approached to the island wharf, I realized the island had the xuan shape.

A day trip to Chikubushima is definitely worth the effort. It's one of the islands located in Lake Biwako, one of the largest lakes in the world.
In terms of sightseeing, there're not a lot of 'touristy' things to do around Biwako or Shiga, but Chikubushima offers a nice view, a shrine complex, colorful scenery, some historic atmosphere and a good walking exercise.
It's about 30 minute ferry ride from Nagahama, and you can buy the tickets on the day you want to take the ferry. When we asked for advance reservations, they didn't have that.
The island is not so big, so you can enjoy a leisurely walk for about 2-3 hours and still see most of the island.
If you're wondering what to do around Shiga/Biwako, Chikubushima is worth looking into.

Go only if you have plenty of time as the whole trip will take up about half a day. Ferry ride is not long, about half-an-hour one way and only a small part of the Island is accessible on foot, which could be completed in 30 mins. Be prepared to climb high steps for going up to the Main Shrine on hill top.

It was so exciting traveling on the speed boat to the island. My son loved it. He was at the front of the boat on the way there and back of the boat on the way back. The island is very small and there was enough time to explore everything and have lunch in a little restaurant by the port. Lots of steps so not so good for pushchairs or people with disabilities.

You must to visit if you are in Kyoto. Shiga prefecture is just few minutes by train from Kyoto, Chikubushima is most recommend place to go in Shiga prefecture.

Small island with temple and shrine complex (and accompanying museum) on top of a steep hill. Easily accessible by ferry - I took the ferry from Omi-Iamzu, spent 45 minutes on Chikubushima, then ferry to Nagahama. On a sunny day there are plenty of photo ops looking out on to Biwa-ko

I caught a ferry out from Nagahama which was about 3000 yen return (20 minutes or so each way). Its a really nice trip out there and I enjoyed sitting outside on the ferry. Hogon-ji is a pretty impressive complex. You'll have to walk up several short steep flights of stairs to get there. The main hondo is quite large and you can walk up to another pagoda there. While waiting for the ferry back you buy a "potato cake" which is really a little mochi thing - tastes great.

If you want to really enjoy this trip, make sure to prepare well so you know it's history and what you will see there. There is no english help at hand once you are on on the island. So don't make the same mistake as we did.
Though the temples are beautiful, the only thing that makes them really special is the location.
