We visited on New Years Day for "hatsumode" and had a wonderful time. The shrine is nowhere near as crowded as the major shrines in Kyoto or Tokyo at New Years. A visit hear is a great way to have a memorable New Years experience without lining up for hours just to enter the shrine. The traffic however was atrocious.... More

It is said that this is where the Gods gather during the 10th month of the lunar calendar, or Kannazuki (the month during which Gods everywhere else in Japan leaves their 'home' to come here). This same month is referred to as Kamiarizuki (literally 'Gods are here', or the month where Gods are present) in Izumo. Unfortunately quite a bit... More

I have been there twice, in 2008, 2012. Last time, I went to Izumo Taisha by train named Kabuki Densha Tour. It was very interesting for me. Just because, after we came there by train, we saw at a hall the Kabuki show. If you visit to Shimane, go there.

Izumo taisha is the second most important Shinto Shrine in Japan, and it's located in Izumo city , Shimane Prefecture. It's also the oldest shrines which was built in 1744 in Japan. We arrived early which was great as there were few people and the immense space could be felt. For people without Japanese, I would advise definite reading up about this place before visiting it as most of the explanations are in Japanese. Be prepared to walk a lot.

a very famous shrine in Shimane area but actually not many sightseeing and distinctive features, just quite similar to any other shrine in any other Japan areas.

We met the director of tourism at another shrine and he recommended going to the Izumo Shrine. Glad we followed his advice. Free parking available and a short walk to the grounds which are extensive. Not too many tourists around, so the site had an original feel to it. Beside the main building there are a large number of smaller... More

It is an important shrine in Japanese religious. All Japanese god gathered here in October on lunar calendar every year. You will see accommodations for other gods, only opens in October. On the other hand, Japanese people tend to come to this shrine to pray for either better chance to meet the right person or better relationship with him. We... More
