Izumo taisha is not only one of the most historically fascinating temples in Japan, but it's located in one of my favorite prefectures - Shimane. It has a lot to offer.

I visited the Shrine as part of a comprehensive tour of Shimane with a Japanese speaking friend. The Shrine was the only place we saw westerners during our entire trip. The Shrine itself is wonderful from the gardens with Rabbits pounding mochi (it was Autumn)...More

I've been wanting to go here for a while now--since I've studied Japanese history, myths, and legends. Izumo Taisha is known for en-musubi (bonding of fates), so you will see a lot of items, such as the omamori (luck-bringing amulet), geared towards marriage and fate...More

I arrived at 7:00am and there were maybe 5 other tourists there. I loved the chance to get pictures of the stunning architecture and surroundings without a bunch of strangers in my shots, and as the shrine opens at 6:30, I recommend an early morning...More

Many people come here to pray, especially brides and grooms ask for a blessing. The complex consists of several structures of which this is the prettiest.

The shrine is located within a large park with several torii gates lining the walkway. I learned that the shrine is not just one building. I highly recommend seeing this treasure.

It takes 2-3 hour for visit the shrine and for the museum another 2 hour needed. I think in summer it can be but in winter it is hard to finish in one day.
