Beautiful Streetscape
Jul 2017 • Family
Although it is not very long, the street of residences and shops from the 1700s is very photogenic. The architecture is unique, and the shops contain lovely examples of indigo-dyed products and bamboo crafts that meet the entire spectrum of prices. There are a few coffee shops/cafes that are perfect for a break. This street is a fun stroll into the past.

History lovers

A small town for history lovers. There is an indigo workshop where you can make your own indigo handkerchief. Suggest not to go on Monday as most shops close on that day.

A historical area full of cute shops and friendly faces
Mar 2015 • Friends
Udatsu street is lined with old merchant houses from the Edo and Meji periods. As well as being a great way to experience Japanese history, there are also lots of cute shops, cafes and restaurants on this street. There's also a tourist office where you can hire bikes for free. Everyone is so friendly and lots of people stopped to chat to us. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

If you'd like to learn more, I've written a blog post with lots of recommendations and a hand drawn map of the area, check it out here: http://peekingduck.co/little-known-town-wakimachi-japan/

Japanese cultural history at its best
From the time i stepped into the township of Udatsu i got the feeling of days gone by...it was so interesting, and every person that i came into contact with was so friendly, i could tell that they wanted me there, business of course, but more than that, i have also friends who live there, and they love living there. The Japanese Government must be commended for their imput into this historical place, every Japanese should visit this area just to absorb their culture and never forget it...
