Hofu Tenmangu is one of three major Tenmangu in Japan, beside Kyoto and Dazaifu. It is a highlight of Hofu sightseeing and absolutely worth visiting. The long passage to the shrine has a quaint atmosphere. The steps are a little bit hard to climb, but from the level of the main building, you can enjoy a nice view of the city. The surrounding area is also very pleasant like a park.

We heard this is an important shrine in Hofu so we planned for a trip.
It is one of Japan’s leading Tenman-gu (shrines sacred to the God of Academic Learning) which ranked alongside the Dazaifu Tenman-gu in Dazaifu (we have visited twice already).. It is believed to be the oldest Tenman-gu in Japan.
It is quite a long journey as we travelled from Hiroshima… The helpful staff at sta guided us well and 15 mins we were here at the entrance. Walked across the Shopping street/arcade which disappointingly mainly closed shops.
We walked along the large stone steps that lead to Sakura-Mon. There are a couple of restaurants and shops at the front entrance to the shrine but again not opened yet, 10am..
It is off-cherry blossom but we still see some of them clingering on, plus lots of plum! Believed the shrine looks beautiful any time,. . I imagine the garden would be breath-taking in the fall when the leaves change Up at the main holden the premise is clean and serene. There are many types of fortune telling notes; you just put 100 yen into the box hole as there are no staff/attendant – self service. We bought some lucky charms for traffic-safety and house-blessing.
We explore the area and found there’s even a plum blossom path garden
There’s not much worshippers around, 10 the most and it’s closing to noon time on a Monday. We left after an hour or so having taking lots of beautiful pic.
In my opinion, the Shrine deserves more!

The shrine itself is worth a visit in its own right, but it is truly spectacular from mid-February until early-march when the plum blossoms are in full bloom. There is a small playground behind the shrine and several shops and restaurants near the entrance of the shrine. You can also purchase food to feed the pigeons by the pavilion that overlooks the city. 15-20 min walk from Hofu Station.

The shrine itself is beautiful any time, but I really love to visit during plum blossom season. Although their festival begins in February, the flowers are usually not at their best until the first part of March. This year I visited on 2 March and the blossoms were maybe at about 60%.
In the front part of the grounds there are some really beautiful hanging plum blossom trees. If you go up to the back side of the shrine (where one of the parking lots is located), there are a bunch of plum blossom trees there also.
My friends and I also love how you can fish for your omikuji (fortune) here. It’s so cute! Unfortunately, it’s all in Japanese so if you get one you’ll have to have someone translate it for you. It comes in a cute little fish though that makes for a nice little souvenir.
There are a couple of restaurants and shops at the front entrance to the shrine. There’s also some parking available.
We also saw some food stands scattered throughout the temple grounds. Not sure if they’re always there, or if it was just because of the plum blossoms.
It was pretty busy when we went and we got one of the last parking spaces when we arrived at a little after 0930.

The shrines are beautiful. They have all types of fortune telling notes based on your bday, no attendant, you put 100 yen into the hole in between--but cant understand since all in Japanese. They also have lucky charms for sale for house, school, etcc..

From 2003... Hofu Tenmangu is a must see! The feastival that we students dance through the streets with the City Hall team was an amazing activity! Want to go back to visit at some point as I live the culture and still somewhat familiar with the area.

There's not much to see around so the Tenmangu is the landmark around. Relatively less famous then the one in Dazaifu but this is the oldest one. Worth to look around and worship for success in your studies (if any) if you are on your way from Iwakuni to Yamaguchi or vice versa.

Beautiful with the plum blossoms and the beginning of Sakura season was a beautiful afternoon and there is a small playground for children and all kinds of nooks and crannies to investigate I had a wonderful treat from a food vender while I was there and a pottery market was set up in the parking area.

It was my first visit ♪
I was blown away by the richly colored architecture.
The grounds of the temple are not very large, so you can look around slowly.
However, as it is located on high ground, it may be difficult to walk up the approach.
