Cathedral has been reconstructed and enlarged on several occasions. Fairly ordinary facade. More ornate interior.

The origins of the Cathedral date back to the 11th century however when the Cathedral was rebuilt in 1402 it was built over the foundations of the earlier Medieval church. The Cathedral was again substantially enlarged and renovated during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was during the early 19th century renovations that the portico, that stretches the length of the facade, was built, giving the Cathedral a fairly plain, neo-gothic appearance. The campanile, which is separate from the main part of the cathedral, is believed to date back to the 11th and 12 centuries whilst the nearby Romanesque Baptistery, which was unfortunately closed during our visit, was built over a burial ground in the first part of the 11th century. Internally the Cathedral has three naves with lovely stucco rib vaulted ceilings, lots of arched columns which separate the main nave from the aisles and an octagonal cupola. There are three very ornate chapels on either side of the smaller naves as well as an additional chapel at either end of the side aisles. There are two elaborately decorated balconies, one holding the organ, on either side of the main aisle. The high altar, as well as the other altars, is richly decorated in polychrome marble, gilded wooden decorations and ornaments as well as a series of seven very tall silver candle sticks. The beautifully crafted wooden stalls in the choir were installed in the first half of the 18th century. Of note also are the numerous frescoes and beautiful paintings that adorn the walls and the chapels.

Lovely church particularly interesting for its decoration. It has been decorated in a very poor way, in the sense paint has been used to try and imitate more intricate churches.

Really nice roof and floor. Church closes after services/ceremonie. So only to visit right after a service.

One of the churches in the walking area of the center of town near to the Battistero and to the church of SS Trinita'. In the square in front to the Duomo you can see the statue of the Mose and in front to the Duomo the Seminario Arcivescovile
