This cemetery was definitely one of highlights of our trip around Romania. There are several "happy" painted headstones, each of them telling its different story. Unfortunately, we don't understand Romanian language, but though we understood quite a lot from the pictures.

Too prettified, to my mind, maybe a one-of-the kind cemetery born from the extraordinary imagination, humour, wit and poetic gifts of a great man, Ioan Stan Patras.Pity that his rhymes can't be rendered in any other language to match the beauty and message of the original....More

By the bright colors of the crosses (and of the church inside cemetery), by the short epitaph in lyrics graved in every cross, this place give you an another perspective about death, in generrally.

The merry cemetery is unique. Rather than being sombre, the graves celebrate the lives of the people who have been buried, with funny poems about their lives and colourful pictures of what was most important to them. The headstones are hand carved and decorated in...More

This is a very unusual place. It is a cemetery where there are visual representations of the deceased with - apparently - amusing, apt comments about the deceased on the painted headstones, unfortunately lost on us English speakers so if you could have a Romanian...More

We spent time in Romania visiting the wooden churches, painted monasteries and staying with Romanian families in their homes thanks to our guide Colin Shaw. Colin brought us here and then visited the home/museum of the artist and woodcarver who started this amazing tradition. So...More

The cemetery of Sapanta, is like a book about the life and death of the villagers. The artisan became the a narrator who got to write the village chronicle. I found this to be so unique and interesting, with the brightly coloured and pictured, wooden...More

You could get by car or you could find connections to take the train from Iasi at least to Sighet-- and then there might be some buses to Sapanta where the Cemetery is

You are supposed to pay 4 RON entry fee, which includes the right to take photos. I can't recommend any accommodation in the village, but it certainly exists.

No. There are no similar cemeteries in Romania and it takes quite awhile to drive there. It takes about five hours from Cluj-Napoca.
