Beautiful Old Town in the "Ruhrgebiet"

Beautiful half-timbered houses. Here you have a look like the cities looked earlier. Contrast to the industrial districts in the area.

Hattingen is a lovely old town dating back 600 years, part of the town was destroyed during ww2 due to the close proximity of the steel works. The part of the town that survived is beautiful with the majority of the buildings of half timber construction, what we really liked was that it isn't on the normal tourist trail so... More

I really liked this old town. There are many old buildings. Besides the traditional white-and-brown style there's also buildings with lead plating, which is interesting. There's a city wall with a bit of modern art. There's a cute toll house. And there is a small museum.

We visited Hattingen while staying in Iserlohn on business. We had a great walk around the Altstadt with our host. Very impressive. Kinda hipster cool in a German way. I've visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber on several occasions and while impressive, it's overrun with tourists. In Hattingen you get to see the old timber framed architecture without all of the... While staying in Essen for several weeks this summer, we often drove to Hattingen to walk around, do some shopping, and take photos of the medieval buildings. Hattingen has many of them. The town isn't very big, so you won't feel overwhelmed. There's ample parking and some nice shops and eating places.

Very nice old city. Those beautiful wooden houses are perfect. Atmosphere in October was very quite but nice. If you are near Hattingen, you definately have to visit old city!

It is not that big. But therefore it is an absolute pearl. Narrow cobbled streets with beutiful houses, some nice pubs and a lot of excellent restaurants. Nice to stroll around for an hour of two.

We visited Alstadt for a day trip. The houses are charming and we enjoyed walking along the shopping street and through the village. We had lunch at a superb cafe, Speise Zimme. The wine and pancakes were delicious and the cafe has a beautiful terrace perfect for relaxing during spring / summer. The service was friendly and good. Blankenstein Castle... More

We went to Altstadt Hattingen in December to experience their annual Christmas Market and were not disappointed. The Christmas decorations of the wonderful historic buildings and smaller wooden sales cabins, yummy smells of roasted almonds, mulled wine and bratwurst everywhere. How could you go wrong? Even parking was not too big of an issue (it was not a weekend!). Despite... More
