If you go there, you should definetly go by car, because public transportation is not very well connected to this place. I recommend also to join a guided tour. If you are interested in fossils it is good place to visit.

This was an organised visit with a guide as part of university geology seminar. Hence comments will not apply to many. It was of such great interest along with questions and debate time flew so never made it to the bottom. Our guide was a...More

We visited it last year in summer. We just managed to get on the last tour, but there was no time left to see the museum on site. However, the tour was informative and there are some fossils found available to see and our guide...More

It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and could definitely impress. However, it's the worst presented UNESCO site I've ever visited. First of all, the signposting to get there is atrocious. Our car's GPS brought us close but then didn't find the exact location. The signs...More

We went there with the kids, but the actual place was closed and it did not make the impression as if there is actually much to see. Clearly a very important spot for science, and also the museum with some of the finds was interesting,...More

I was genuinely diappointed when I got there. You definetly need a car. If you try to go there by public transport it'll be a nightmare all by itself. At site they've got a small information center and offer tours trough the pit. As all...More

Are you interested in fossils? Are you interested in volcanic history? Interested in geophysics? Then you should visit “Grube Messel” (pit Messel). You will not see any Dino fossils as the fossils in the pit Messel are dating much younger. But that doesn’t make it...More

When I was a kid, one could dig here for oneself finding fossils and all kinds of stones and minerals. Well, this is over; nothing must be touched, and the small museum doesn't really compensate for the lack of hands-on.

This is the information center and the fossil pit where the excavations for the fossils take place. There is a one hour tour for groups where guides explain how the pit originated, the history of the fossil excavation and you will have the possibility to...More
