I tried to research this route and found it difficult to plan for this visit. Bus #118 or a taxi would get us here. When we arrived we stumbled upon a great tourist info building (and bike rental). The lady was extremely helpful! She gave us a GREAT map and marked it with places to see, hours that places were open as well as the cost to get in. The places to see were pretty spaced out and entrances were not always obvious. Luckily we had planned to spend several hours walking, and we needed all that time. This is not something you can rush to see everything.

We did not rent any bikes we juat walked up and down Via Appia, admired the ruins and took in the spirit of the place. It's quiet, a blessing to go there after crowded and noisy Rome. You also get to see some very fancy villas.

We visited via Appia Antica on my birthday, my choice of activity for the day. I was not disappointed! It was a pleasant walk through the countryside, and the historical value of the original road sections - as well as the old buildings, landmarks, and monuments we pass - only increased the thrill of the visit. On a sunny late spring day in the late afternoon, the lighting was perfect for picture-taking. This was a short scooter ride from the Colosseum, and well worth the trip.

We hired two bicycles with kids seats and had a great day at Appia Antica. We cycled through the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica until Cecilia Metella.

All the online reviews I read described this as a walk in the park, free of traffic on a Sunday. After a rip off 17.50 Euro taxi ride from central Rome, we spent 2.5 miles dodging cars, manic cyclists, joggers, power walkers and horse riders on a single track road with few pedestrian paths due to the narrow, often wall enclosed boundary. This is not recommended for the faint hearted, those with young children or those with limited mobility. Another tip for those on foot is that the road is all up hill from Rome - consistently. Stout shoes are recommended. It took 2.5miles from the park entrance to reach an actual bit of Roman Road which lasted for about 500 mtrs before reverting to more recent cobbles. There were a few buildings of historic interest, but not as many as I anticipated. We waited 40 mins for a bus for our return to Rome, only 1.5 Euros. Overall, a long journey for a 'walk in the park'.
