Kichijoji is my favourite area of Tokyo and the place I would choose to live in the city.
The area is wonderfully relaxed, bordering on Inokashira Park and the extraordinary Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Fabulous for shopping, its streets include some designer stores and a great range of quality secondhand and vintage clothing shops. It also has a branch of that wonderful ice cream pancake outlet, Pearl Lady.

Highly recommended for a few hours sightseeing & shopping. Also has many restaurant options, especially on the park side of the station. Sun Road has a large selection of shops. Disclaimer - I lived quite near Kichijoji for 2 years.

Kichijoji reminds me a lot of places back in the UK I like. It's filled with quirky stores, vintage clothing and tiny restaurants as well as one of the loveliest parks I've been to (Inokashira Park; Lots of grass and benches, cool and original street performers and a welcoming vibe). It's a place where you can wander without being swallowed by a crowd, dilly dallying about the place and a variety of independent stores not pandering to the latest trends. Shibuya is cool but I struggle to find clothes I really like there, maybe because I'm a Brighton Hipster and I love that used clothes feel, but Kichijoji had a lot more on offer due to my tastes I suppose. It has a youthful vibe without feeling juvenile or gimmicky like Harajuku, and is quite bohemian in that you can find rolling tobacco here as well as a few eccentric sort without falling into ojii-san-sailor-suit like Akihabara. Not that I dislike Shibuya, Akihabara or Harajuku, just Kichijoji feels a lot less try-hard and a lot more authentic. Just a chilled out place in the maddenly big city that is Tokyo.

I live in kitijoji in Japanese 吉祥寺 for 10 years. Kitijoji is a name of station in Musashino city western Tokyo. Take Chuo line from Shinjuku for 20 minutes. Around Kitijoji station there are 4 department stores, Yodobashi electronics store, Yamada electronics store, Huge UNIQLO shop. You can find almost every items can buy in Tokyo. Restaurants are not expensive compared to those in central Tokyo and they are very good. Although a little messy, kitijoji is local and cozy place to visit. There is Inokashira park and zoo near from Kitijoji station, only 5 minutes walk, on the way to park you will find many nice shops and restaurants along the street. If you sightseeing or live in Tokyo, I recommend visiting Kitijoji is one of the best options to experience Japan.

Kichijoji is a great area of Tokyo to stay in - cheaper and calmer than downtown Tokyo, but still close enough to see Tokyo easily. Traditional food market alone will make your stay worthwhile.

The station building was remodeled less than a year ago and there are two floors of excellent boutiques and restaurants and basement level excellent food shopping. No need to go to Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro- almost everything is here and less crowded.
A place to just walk around and discover - and a wonderful kimono store in the covered arcade (new kimonos- not the used stores few shops away) and a large Daiso ¥100 store across from a very good Pakistani restaurant across the street.
Jazz clubs on the side streets, three Kaldi coffee discount stores, good yakitori restaurants near the entrance to the park. Even LL Bean.
Fall matsuri is also really nice!
Oh yes, there's a reasonable florist and nursery just outside the Seiyu store!
Just one caution- women should be cautious about walking around the park alone at night.

For a really fun day rather than using the south exit of Kichijoji Station to go to Inokashira Park, which is supposedly the "highlight" of Kichijoji go out of the north exit.
Across the bus plaza and almost directly to the north of the west side of the plaza is an area of shops, restaurants, izekaya, and you name it straight out of immediate post war Japan. This area is called Harmonica Yokocho and covers about 6 square blocks. It is jamb packed with tiny alleys most no more than 2 meters wide lined with shops, resturants, bars, izekaya, everything under the sun. It is like going back to Tokyo in the 2-5 years after the end of World War II. A fantastic experience, where you can spend hours poking through stores, drinking beer, eating ramen, teriyaki, etc.
The Eel Shop at the south central end of this area is clearly the best in Tokyo and the owner is there daily killing, gutting and roasting live eel, not inexpensive but absolutely the best eel I have ever eaten. You have to take it home as there is no in store eating space, but that is the way the locals do it. Get there early as by 3 in the afternoon he is normally sold out and closing up.
There are no restrooms that I could find/see but a Tokyu Department store on the north side of the neighborhood has excellent public facilities.
You will see rather few foreigners in this area as it is very little known, but is normally crowded with Japanese particularly on weekends. Don't be afraid to go into the restaurants as the staff in almost all is super friendly, the prices very reasonable and the ambiance casual and not the formal presentation of expensive Tokyo restaurants. There is a steak house, on the 2nd floor of the street on the west side of Hokocho which is excellent, you probably will have to wait in line outside, and then stand on the stairs for a while to get in, but worth the time and the price is RIGHT.

Having a free day in Tokyo I decided to spend it in Kichijoji, suburb Tokyo. Located on the Chuo line, it takes less than 30 minutes from Shinjuku. The place is a hangout for university students and young families with a small expatriate community. Lots of unique items ranging from women’s & men’s wear to household items. At night the place comes alive with its variety of Japanese restaurants, bars and Japanese western cafes. Surprisingly, you can find pet shops and an English-styled barber.

We will always go to Kichijoji. You can go to this place by Inokashira line from Shibuya and get on the trani until it arrives at Kichijoji which is the terminal. you will not have to worry that you will get lost. Or if you get on the train from Shinjuku by Chuuo Line you also can go directlyto Kichijoji . It is a very trendy place with so many shops, good coffee shops with home made cake by the owner, restaurants, and Tokyu Department Store and Japanese restaurant that gives good food or even a cheap western food for young generation etc. We will walk from the station for a few minutes to go to the Kutsushita ya (Sock Shop) which is on the left hand side if you walk from the station in the crowded main road next to Starbucks and close toTokyu Department store. It is easy to find if you ask about Tokyo Department Store. The shop is in another road in front of the Store. The reason that I always go to buy socks because this shop has many kinds of socks -inexpensive, nice, trendy and durable not like what I bought here in the US. Most of the socks in the shop are very trendy for casual, sport wear with many kinds of colors and styles to choose. I always buy 3 pairs for 1,000 yen which are special discount price. After that we will go to have a cup of tea and coffee at Starbucks. It is a very nice and exciting place to visit and mostly the price here are not expensive --great fun to shop here. So many kinds of unique shops to enjoy shopping or walking around and have fun.
