One of those magnificent off beat destinations so close to Tokyo. And the autumn season brings out the best of this place. The Mitake Gorge is located at OkuTama on the fringes of Tokyo.
Access is using the JR Ome line - Mitake station. The trains departing from Shinjuku station towards Ome. From Ome change trains towards Okutama. There are few holiday special trains directly going from Tokyo to Okutama via Shinjuku and Ome.

The river valley can be reached just besides the Mitake station and stretches out for a considerable distance. The Tama river flowing through the valley creates a picturesque scene. There are walking paths along the river and one can enjoy the natures beauty in its laps.
For autumn seasons, it is best to visit between afternoon and evening hours to enjoy the colours of the season.

We took the train from Shinjuku and changed trains at Ome, going onto Mitake. Then caught the bus ( to the left going out of station) to the cable railway. The Suica card can be used.
It had been raining and we needed our umbrellas on occasions. The visitor centre on way to top is worth a short visit.
You come to a small shopping street just before Musashi Mitake Shrine where you should try the soba especially the one with local mushrooms/ vegetables. About the 2 shop on right. Seating at back of shop.
We didn’t go to Rock Garden, I had been there previously.
Returned to Takimoto station on foot. No one else walking down although a few cars going up and down.
On the way back to Shinjuku we stopped off at Tachikawa where a meat festival was being held in the park. Tried some A4 waygu. The park here is worth a visit.

While it's a it out of the way from Tokyo, it is a wonderful and serene little place to catch your breath from all the hustle and bustle of city life. An easy train ride will bring you to Mitake station or one can travel a bit further and get off at Okutama station, which is right in the Mitake Valley. Close by is lake Okutama, a reservoir lake with winding roads and many viewing areas overlooking the lake and mountain side. The people are polite and friendly, and life in this area is relaxed. Visit the valley and see for your self, you won't regret it!

One if the best places in and around Tokyo to enjoy the Wonderful fall colours.
It is around 90 minutes from Tokyo on train along JR Ome line.
Once you get down at the Mitake station, cross the road and walk across the bridge over Tama river. Then there are trails along the river on either side. Walk down those trails to enjoy the fall colours.

The Mitake Valley is evocative of areas in Europe with burbling winding rivers, pristine fresh air and sharp pointed hills. Nestled in the ravine are Ryokans, restaurants, sake distillers and artisans. A very pleasant place to spend the day.

From Tokyo station can take Chuo Line to Oume. From Oume can take another train to Okutama. Very near to Miyake Station. Can have fishing nearby and also practicing rafting here.
