Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very steep cobbled pedestrian lane winds up the hill to the entrance to the castle. Both this & the slopes inside the castle grounds are viable for a sturdy mobility scooter. It cost €2 entrance fee. The ramps zig zag up to the viewpoint at the top of the castle. There are plenty of places to rest& catch your breath, read the plaques that give historic information about the building & use of the castle in former centuries. Note the whole attraction is outdoors & it can be windy & a bit chilly at the top, even in June. We visited on a Sunday & castle is open every day except Thursday.

Like all of the Andalusian castles the remains of the original construction are Roman, with the over lay of Moorish additions, but the Roman construction is the impressive part built in the 1stC BC. The work that was needed to complete fortifications like this over 2,000 years ago is quite staggering. The 360' view from the top is stunning - spanning from the Grazalema mountains past Jerez to Cadiz, and along the coast to Tarifa. Great photo ops at every turn! Good explanation boards in Spanish & English are placed at intervals on the path round the castle.

First fortified by the Romans, then the Visigoths, then the Muslims and finally the Christians - Wow!
If you have a camera, take a picture of the colour coded map by the entrance showing who built what - it will help you understand the building.
I liked the way the castle clearly showed the different styles of building and the different quality of workmanship and materials - really interesting.
For those less interested in structures, it is worth the effort for the view from the top.
Be careful with children and any who are not very good on their feet as it is very windy. My father was almost blown over as it caught him unprepared. Paths and handrails are sturdy and very much appreciated.
Pity they had to put the water cisterns next to the castle.

First stop is the tourist office to get a map. You follow the trail as it winds its way through the narrow streets and up to the castle. It is quite a hike and gets steel towards the end. Warm enough in February so what it is like in the height of summer I dread to think. At the top the entrance fee is 3 euros pp and you are rewarded with spectacular 360 degrees view out to sea, inland and possibly Africa on a clear day. The castle is in ruins though elements of Roman times are visible. Worth the effort!

Amazing Panoramic view of Medina and the places nearby. The place needs around 1 hour max to see. Just go to enjoy the view. Learn the history of the castle which goes back to the Roman period,Moors etc.
And the entrance ticket cost 3 euros and the car can reach the spot.

The castle was first built by the Romans and then used and expanded by the Muslims, medieval Christians and finally by Napoleon's troops. You can clearly distinguish remains from each period. The guide and informative panels do a good job explaining the visit. Plus, the views from the top are really worthy, you can even see the coast from there. The ticket price was 2€.

This is an amazing place. Easy to see why the Phoenicians chose this hill to fortify and all the generations of occupants followed them. Even the army of Napoleon garrisoned it. I went up to see the superb sunset from the top viewing platform just before they closed the gates. The Levante wind was also blowing which added to the experience.

A delightful large village capped with this semi ruined fortress where you can survey from North Africa to Cadiz Jerez de la frontera and Arcos de la frontera. It was perfect in winter temperatures with a visit to Roman remains but in summer those soldiers must have roasted.

I would like to know the opening times and days as we are planning a short visit and want to be sure we will be able to visit the castillo. Also is there a charge for entrance?

Is this attraction wheelchair accesible?
Written 18 May 2018
You can drive right to gate & they may even let you drive up further if you have a wheelchair if not it is an incline to push up. There unfortunately a wheelchair may not be possible there are ramps with sides the bottom is metal mesh hard to push on and also a few steps. If you are going to be in or close to Medina Sidonia the view will still be worth it although you will only get about 300degrees of views not the full 360
