About
Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

- filitrottiHelsinki, Finland182 contributionsFor art (and history) loversWe like modern art, and if there's modern art museum, we'll be sure to visit. This museum was surprisingly big, with many interesting works. It also enlighted us how difficult history Spain has had recently. There was no happy art.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023
- Flower53_10Tbilisi, Georgia1,764 contributionsBeautiful modern art piecesInteresting museum of the modern art, maybe the collection is not very rich, but there are quite a few of the interesting pieces. Especially some beautiful art pieces by Miro who was apparently originally from Alicante. Worth visiting if you are in the area.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 March 2024
- Gadabout1963London, United Kingdom134 contributionsOutstanding collection of 20th Century Art and a fascinating library. All free. This is a superbly curated gallery. There is a clear irony that here is free thought, expressed through the eye of the artist, that is yours to dive into for free while, next door, the Catholic basilica rules your head in a clichéd display of gaudy tat and demands 6€ for the privilege. I choose the free thought of 20th century Spain and its struggle against Franco. I would visit Alicante again just for this place and spend several days benefiting from it's riches.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024

The architecture of the house itself is also already interesting, there are several interesting moments of light and cuts through the house.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 May 2024

I want to echo the review before. As an artist and frequent visitor to galleries around the world I was astounded by the rude and hostile environment of this gallery. On walking in the lady on reception barked at us. We couldnt understand what she was saying so explained (in Spanish) that we didn’t understand, but she just kept repeating what she was saying aggressively. She then said ‘is free, ah now you come’ in a most patronising manner. We already knew it was free, we were just confused by what she was saying to us! Then we were followed round by Uber miserable gallery attendants, shouted at for trying to take a photo (without flash which is commonplace in most galleries and there were no signs banning photos!) It is such a shame as the art is well curated and the gallery is great otherwise. Also the toilets don’t have locks which is quite scary especially if you are wearing a play suit!

We went here when there was an exposition of Bruno Munari, a modern Spanish artist. It was very interesting and Munari's life was told via text on the wall. A point of improvement could be more English text, as mostly, there was only explanation in Spanish. The other floors with standard exposition were also very interesting. The stairs were made of marble with small lights in them, and the toilets were clean. Also very nice, the entrance is free! Well worth the time

We never made it into the museum. As a disabled person who is not great on their legs there were a total of FOUR disabled parking spaces near the museum. Everything else was too far away! As we had driven from Xalo we weren’t too happy. It was so disappointing…….

This art museum is located in the oldest civil building that is preserved in Alicante. The Baroque-style building dates from 1685 and is located next to the Basilica of Santa Maria. However, there is a new modern building attached and the museum interior looks very modern.
There are two art museums in Alicante located quite near to each other: MACA and MUBAG. Both have a free entrance. Both museums are quite small and can be easily combined on the same day.
MACA has an important collection of 20th-century art. It has works by Picasso, Dali, and Miro among others.

The design and the collection of this museum is perfect and surprising. Don't forget to take your time for the portraits series of Esther Ferrer. You also find a very spercial 3D Vasarely plus work of his son.

Modern building that houses a permanent collection of contemporary art distributed over three floors, with some guest pieces, and temporary exhibitions on the ground floor. Different cultural events are organized (talks, screenings, visits...). Free access. There are lockers to leave your coats (no currency needed).

This morning I visited this contemporary art museum on four levels. The arrangement of the works is pleasant because they are not too crowded and also thanks to the manageable flow of visitors, walking around the museum is pleasant. The works are perhaps not as important as those in the great museums of European capitals, but the fact that entry is free also constitutes an incentive to visit.

The museum is located in the heart of the historic center of the city in a beautiful baroque palace which previously houses the Museo de La Asegurada. During the Transición it was renovated thanks to the Alicante artist Eusebio Sempere who donated his works together with his private art collection of other 20th century artists.
The structure is beautiful, clean, bright, spacious and contains 177 very interesting works of art ranging from Juan Miró to Chillida, Picasso, Juan Gris, Bacon, Giacometti, Tàpies, Chagall, Kandinsky, Dalì, Equipo Crónica, Christo and many others, in addition to the works and installations of Semper which create an interesting biography.
The library is also very interesting
