Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very enjoyable afternoon visit to Scattery Island on 19th August 2023. Morning tour was cancelled due to Storm Betty but the afternoon tour went ahead. Was warned the sea might be choppy but it was grand, very smooth. Good communication at all times. There are many facets of the island - the Round Tower, the wildlife, the historical church ruins, the lighthouse, the beaches, an overgrown gun battery and a small but informative OPW information centre. Roughly 15 minutes to walk to the lighthouse and battery at the end of the island. Needed to cross a small stream on a rocky beach but otherwise easily accessible.

Brilliant day despite the Irish weather. The sea looked very rough but have to say the sailing was so smooth and so quick you did not feel a thing. Plenty of time on the Island and would recommend the guided tour as the guides are brilliant with lots of knowledge. I wish there was a little cafe or somewhere to get a hot drink on the island especially when its a wet day otherwise we packed our own sandwiches and ate them on the picnic bench. Scattery is well worth the trip to.

Really deserves 5* but we drove 3 hours from Sligo with 4 kids, got there 45 mins early as per email then approximately 30-40 mins after arranged departure time sailing was cancelled and we arranged to go on later sailing 4 hours later. We had to go buy dinner pay for activities to fill time which again was fine. Then we sailed as arranged at around two while on island I received a phonecall to from staff to say our 6 o'clock return sailing was cancelled and we now had to return on earlier boat. We were refunded the difference for longer to shorter trip but it was all a little frustrating. Island was beautiful, buildings stunning and restored. I will try it again in a few summers but hope it runs smoother

The boat trip going through the locks was really interesting. Then all the history on the island was fascinating and our tour guide, Aidan, was extremely knowledgeable and personable. Highly recommended!

We took the Scattery Island Tour boat, very fast and pleasant trip over. We were met by a very informative tour guide who brought us to the key monastic sites. We then took the 15 minute walk to the lighthouse and artillery battery. We then had a picnic and the children were then invited to paint some sea stones which they enjoyed. It is a beautiful, scenic, unspoilt island. A little gem.

I think OPW may have issue with dogs. There are lots of rabbits on the island.
I would advise checking it out before booking.

Can I bring a small Bichon dog on the island tour

Hi there,
Yes, no problem at all. Once the dog remains on the lead both on the ferry and while on the island. Owners are also asked to bring clean up bags.
Thanks

I have my dog on holidays with us, can we bring him over on the boat?
How long is the boat trip over?
Irene H
11 contributions
Hello Orla
Small to medium dogs may travel on the boat and the island once they remain on the lead and owners take responsibility to clean up after them while on the island. We ask all passengers who are considering taking a dog to be mindful of other passengers onboard and use their own best judgement as to whether the trip would be suitable for their dog. The sailing time is approx 30 minutes, it takes 15 mins to exit the Locke gates and then 15 mins sailing time to the island.

Did you have to book the ferry ahead if time and does it ho more than once a day?
Chris Mc K

There are several trips to the island daily depending on weather and tides but definitely more than one a day, it’s still advisable to book ahead though.
