We (2 adults+2 children) decided to visit Scattery Island on Monday 20/7/2020 . We had been meaning to do this for sometime and it was a great opportunity to catch up with friends. It was lovely to see Irene again after all these years and what a fabulous service she and her team are running, from start to finish. All Covid-19 measures were evident with hand santising, sanitisation of the boat after each journey and face-coverings in place. Even with all the additional Covid precautionary measures, the trip ran on time and everything was so efficient. John from OPW (Guide) was exceptionally knowledgeable about the Island and the local area, it was lovely chatting to him. We had a picnic on the Island and the girls swam off the pier but the time just few by. It would be amazing to visit the Island first sailing in the morning and come back on the last sailing in the evening if that were possible (but I can understand numbers wise how that might be difficult from a planning perspective!) so you get the most out of the day and stunning surroundings. What a beautiful little island on a gorgeous sunny day - 5 stars for Scattery Island Tours (we will be back!). Irene, thank you so much. Hope you and your team all have a great time for the remainder of the season and many congrats on your wonderful venture. All the best. Carmel Keane

Very professional from booking, checkin temperature testing, allocated seating on boat leading to full traceability, cleaning, sanitizer, etc. OPW guide on the island was very professional, 1 hour tour on arrival, we had the second hour to do our own thing, very clean toilets and information centre. Bring a picnic, benches there and plenty stones on the shoreline to sit and enjoy. Highly recommend, will be back.

A visit to Scattery Island is a definite must for anyone interested in history, architecture and a natural and unspoilt environment. This island is truly unique . It is being sensitively cared for and conserved by the OPW and a team of individuals who are fully commited its preservation. Our guide, Simon, was well informed and able to give us very interesting tour full of detail and folklore.
This trip is very good value including the ferry and a guided tour lasting a few hours. I suggest bringing a picnic as there is no cafe or food available on the island - which you will find is a good thing.
I look forward to visiting again.

Could not recommend this tour enough! I had an amazing experience. I went alone by bicycle and the staff were extremely helpful about looking after my bike on the mainland. Temperature was taken before embarking and the staff were very friendly, transparent and informative with their messaging making everyone feel safe and comfortable. Great experience watching the water rise at the lock gates on entry (in particular!) and exit through the marina. On the island, I had the pleasure of having Stephen from local area Labasheeda as a tour guide. He was a fantastic guide and it showed he had such a love for the history of the area and incredible knowledge. Very personable in his storytelling and humorous anecdotes too. Was astounded by the amount of history of the island. Would highly recommend the trip. I went on the 2.5 hour trip which was perfect timing to have the tour and wander around the island and walk to the lighthouse and back and visit the interpretive centre. It was an extremely hot day, with high exposure and little shade, so would recommend the early morning ferry on days like that or maybe the 4.5 hour trip so you can fit in a picnic and a swim. Lots of rabbits on the island, fish and birds of prey too, so great for bird/animal watching!

This tour was excellet from start to finish. Excellent online booking system and information - could perhaps add info that it's ok to take small to medium dogs! The staff were all friendly, courteous and professional whether beforehand, on the boat or on the island - excellent implementatio of Covid regulations as well.
The company running the tours are excellent. The trip to Scattery is short and the island is stunning, peaceful and full of history and heritage. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.

A fantastic experience from start to finish. From the staff at the booking office, the crew on the boat and the tour guide himself, John, not forgetting, of course, the ornithologist Carlos, this trip was worth every cent. A great way to round off a trip to West Clare. Just sorry I haven’t done it before. Thanks to all for a great afternoon.

Traveling through the lock gates fascinated us, and smooth efficiency, of the automatic lock gates mirrored the boat journey from booking, embarking and disembarking. The tour was very informative and audible (I often struggle to hear tour guides outdoors, but no problems with our guide). Plenty of time for a picnic and potter about but not enough time to get to the battery as well. I had the baby in a carrier rather than buggy. Older children really liked their map.

The guided tour was very good with a general overview of the monastic history of the Island. We were on the longer visit - 4hrs - and we walked the circumference of the Island when the guided tour finished. We had a picnic on the route and enjoyed the views. Walking on the stony beach was hard and I would recommend wearing proper walking boots.

Myself and my Husband and 2 boys really enjoyed our trip. Boat was comfortable and safe and tour guide on Island was very informative. Its a nice safe place for kids. Island needs funding to make it wheelchair accessible and it needs a cafe. Other than that it was a lovely trip.

Scattery Island was the final destination on what was a wonderful two-week trip along the Wild Atlantic Way and it certainly was a case of leaving the best to last. The island itself is not so much a hidden gem as a shining jewel in the crown of Irish tourism. A mix of mythology, culture, folklore and history with the legacy of a lost island community set amid stunning scenery and a truly remarkable landscape. Scattery showcases the very best that Ireland has to offer not just to the overseas visitor but to those of us lucky enough to discover this treasure on our own doorstep.
The experience was enhanced by the excellent service provided by the tour operators whose professionalism and attention to detail was second to none. Covid-19 guidelines were implemented in a manner that was both reassuring and thorough. The guide on the island dispensed her knowledge with a light and humorous touch and left us with enough time for some leisurely exploration. The distinct impression was of people who really cared about their business and the island itself.

Hi Gerry,
Thanks so much for your kind review. We really love your reference to it being a 'shining jewel' rather than a hidden gem. How lovely!.. thank you. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your visit and that you felt safe as a result of the COVID protocols in place. We'll be sure to pass on your feedback to both the OPW island guides and the crew on the ferry service.
Thanks again for visiting and for taking the time to write this review. We really do appreciate it. We hope to see you some day again in the future.

I think OPW may have issue with dogs. There are lots of rabbits on the island.
I would advise checking it out before booking.

Hi there,
Yes, no problem at all. Once the dog remains on the lead both on the ferry and while on the island. Owners are also asked to bring clean up bags.
Thanks

I have my dog on holidays with us, can we bring him over on the boat?
How long is the boat trip over?
Written 30 July 2018
Hello Orla
Small to medium dogs may travel on the boat and the island once they remain on the lead and owners take responsibility to clean up after them while on the island. We ask all passengers who are considering taking a dog to be mindful of other passengers onboard and use their own best judgement as to whether the trip would be suitable for their dog. The sailing time is approx 30 minutes, it takes 15 mins to exit the Locke gates and then 15 mins sailing time to the island.

Cara. What boat company did you travel with for the dolphin trip to Scattery please?
Written 6 August 2016
There is a new ferry operator now in place. Scattery Island Tours operate the service to the Island.
Written 28 June 2017
Did you have to book the ferry ahead if time and does it ho more than once a day?
Written 15 August 2015
There are several trips to the island daily depending on weather and tides but definitely more than one a day, it’s still advisable to book ahead though.
