A beautiful place with an exciting history
Jul 2020
A beautiful fort located in the historic area of Leca da Palmeira.
The construction of this fort began in 1638, aiming at the defense of that port against threats from pirates and corsairs. The fort is believed to have been completed in 1720. An excellent piece of architecture, beautiful fortress.

If you are in the area it is worth a walk by as a part of local history, but you cannot normally visit inside so not worth a special trip. Not as well known as Castelo de Queijo nearer Porto but presumably part of the same defensive line protecting the coast from incursions.. There are several nearby restaurants and a couple of nice bars for afterwards

Fortress
Jun 2017 • Couples
This very visible edifice sits on the promenade at Leca. Unfortunately you can only view it externally as it's used as offices for the nearby port. As the pirate extravaganza takes place in July you may find it open publicly then. They don't seem to have caught on to the money making opportunities of their historic buildings!

This is a 17th century fortress, built to maintain the recently won independence from Spain. It's one of several dotted along the Atlantic coastline here. A small military garrison maintained a presence for many years. Now it's a guy cutting the grass and keeping the weeds down.

I wouldn't make a special visit but if you're in Leca you should spend ten minutes having a look. There are several nearby restaurants and a couple of nice beach bars once you've done the cultural bit!
