Address
Neighbourhood: Ginza / Tokyo Nihonbashi
Ginza is famous for being a trendy hotspot, but it's also a downtown area with shops that were founded over a hundred years ago. Department stores and luxury boutiques line the route from Nihonbashi to Ginza. It's a long established tradition to shop and stroll while the road is closed to traffic. Luxury hotels, world class cuisine from talented chefs, and a collection of glitzy clubs will make this area popular with anyone looking for a night out.

Designer toothpicks
Jul 2017 • Couples
This is one of the most unusual shops I have ever been in to. They hand make toothpicks here that they will monogram for you. Not sure how they can continue in business for over 200 years but they have. If you have a week or so in Japan you can get them to monogram toothpicks for you to take home as a rather unusual souvenir. Worth a visit for the curiosity of going into a handmade toothpick shop.

Saruya - true Japanese craftsmanship. Worth the effort for unusual gift for folks at home!
May 2017 • Couples
Established (according to their website) in 1704 Saruya is the only shop in Japan specializing in hand-crafted toothpicks made of Kuromoji or spice wood. In addition to regular toothpicks, some of which are sold in decorative painted wooden boxes, they sell toothpicks to use like a fork for eating sweets or fruit. The boxes make an unusual gift at a reasonable price. The store is on an alley-way but worth the effort to find something truly Japanese and unusual to take home. The sales clerk we encountered was not very friendly but we were pleased with our purchases. Perhaps she was just tired or bored.
