The treasures of the Japanese art kept in the museum (like "Irises screen" by Ogara Korin) can be seen by the visitors only few month in a year. This means that tourists coming from other countries usually do not have a chance to see them. Very sad! And very unfriendly policy!

I absolutely loved the Nezu Museum - the place itself is a work of art, with its beautiful minimalist design, and serene enclosed garden. The museum is a quick visit, and houses a collection of incredibly intricate swords and suits of armour, that showcase extraordinary Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail.
If you can, go during the week to avoid the crowds.

I went to an exhibition of Buddhist art. They are all great Collections and many of them are hard to put on, but the Eleven-faced Kannon standing statue buds, buds are like zushi. The zushi (miniature shrine) appears to be pierced behind the figure pierced by stone. You look good. It looks like it was created in the Tang Dynasty of China and seems to have served as a model for Japanese Buddhist art of the time. Personally, I liked both the standing statue of Kannon and the statue of Aizen Myoo. I walked outside, and I thought it was a nice garden for a quick break from the museum, and a good example of the founder's taste here. Some of them had facilities where you could have a coffee, and it was late and there were people inside, but the entrance had already been closed and I wanted to visit here next time.

Just the garden deserves the 5* rating, as they are gorgeous and a haven of greenery in the middle of Tokyo. I did find however the museum a bit too small, that is not always a problem, but I wasn't impressed by either the permanent or temporary exhibitions. Well worth a visit nevertheless, but there are better museum experiences around. Much worth the visit if in the area, also there is an awesome traditional tempura restaurant very closeby!

This small but impressive museum is located on the private estate and gardens of the Nezu family, collectors of "pre-modern" era Japanese art (and not just paintings). Interesting to walk through, reading information in English and Japanese, and admiring some excellent examples of the country's heritage.
The gardens were extensive, with a variety of small buildings, statues, and ponds, but they are NOT kept up to the usual Japanese gardens standards. So, the gardens were a disappointment.

A small, jewel-box of a museum. Great for when you are tired of shopping in nearby Omotesando Hills. The gardens are lovely. The overall setting is peaceful and serene. The gift shop is epic. The art work is not the best (compared to much larger and more crowded museums), but well curated.
We loved it.

With such high rating we were hoping for something more captivating. A handful of galleries dedicated to few artifacts and scroll after scroll of ancient texts. Perhaps of interest to specialist Japanese scholars but hardly a stimulating experience for the average foreign tourist. Without the gardens the entry fee of 2000 yen (rather than 1100 yen on the website), could be considered by some a little pricy.

Place with very good infrastructure, collection with historical and well-organized pieces. Use the explanatory headset to better benefit from the explanation and understand the facts. As the rooms are dark, it is best to use your headphones and follow the explanations carefully. Bathrooms - clean and located on all floors. It has cabinets to store volume and a water filter with disposable cups. Place to have tea and coffee in the middle of the garden.

The museum was very nicely designed and the exhibition had an interesting selection of feats. It was also labeled in English, which made it easier to learn more about the pieces.
The garden was also wonderful and a nice break from the city.

The architecture of the museum is stunning; especially the entrance with the bamboo. The collection did not disappoint either with some really interesting pieces collected over the years by Mr. Nezu. The highlight, however, was the garden. Large, playful, lush. If you love gardens like I do, then this place is a must in Tokyo. Definitely a romantic place worth exploring for all garden lovers out there. No making out in the bushes, tho... there are many cameras lurking.

You can live without a Japanese girlfriend, but you can't live without trying Japanese girls. Come to Japan for business trips, travel, and relaxation. TG:cc383 and Line:03828. We accept foreigners, and can communicate in Chinese, so you don't need to know Japanese.

Does the 1300¥ fee for the special exhibition also cover admission to the rest of the museum? Or is it 1300¥ for the special exhibition and 1000¥ for general admission (2300¥ total)?
Written 21 November 2018
When I went, I believe the special exhibition price was separate. I remember skipping the exhibition because we really wanted to see the garden the exhibition at the time we were not interested in. I’m pretty sure but. This is several months ago. Make sure to walk around the area afterwards some nice shops even if it’s just window shopping.

Is there a permanent collection always in display? We will be in Tokyo beginning of April 2018 and we would like to know if the Museum will be completely closed between the seasonal exhibitions.
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Written 22 February 2018
I think Nezu museum is closed between the seasonal exhibitions. Next exhibition will start from April 15th, 2018. You can check the schedule on the museum's web site.

I know it's a subjective question, but about how long would you say, on average, one needs to spend to get a good look at exhibits on display and see the garden?
Written 19 December 2017
Depends on how interested you are in old Chinese artifacts and how much you are interested in gardens. Two very different things. When I was there (mid-September 2017) there was so many Chinese artifacts that I felt like I'd seen enough for a lifetime. I spent about two hours in the museum and two hours in the garden. If I went back, I'd take a good camera and spend 1 hour in the museum and 3 in the garden. Others will have different views.

Is there admission fee? Thanks for answering. :)

The Nezu Musuem will open again on Tuesday 13 April with a new exhibition. It is always closed on Monday but open from Tuesday to Sunday every week except when they are installing a new exhibition. There is a good website in English. Be sure to tour the garden and have tea at the teahouse. We lived across the street for several years in the 1970s but the museum has been rebuilt and expanded since those days.
