Neighbourhood: Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.

I agree with another reviewer, if you are in the area and you have visited all the main tourist attractions, then this is worth a stop but don't make a special trip unless you are really interested in the history. Like another world. Very peaceful as not many people know it is there. A world away from the busy Takeshita-dori Street (located just off it). Had I not been with a local, I would never have known. Lovely.

A little harder to find than anticipated, but a nice serene shrine away from the bustle of nearby Takeshita Street, apparently for an important Japanese admiral although unlike other shrines, there didn't appear to be any details. I visited as an "add on" to seeing the Meiji Jingu shrine and Yoyogi Park. Worth finding and taking a few photos.

I read that this shrine was a great place for a bit of peace and quiet and by comparison to the major sightseeing shrines, that is probably true. But honestly, it only captured my attention for about 15 minutes.

Why you would go: very nice small pond with carp and turtles and it is free
What you need to know: it isn't as quiet as you would think since it's right next to Teenagers street and the main road (I could still here cars) and there's no place to sit at the pond. So if you are looking to take a break from it all, I would go to a cafe instead.

Togo Shrine is a decent shrine withing walking distance of the much more impressive Meiji Jingu. The shrine itself is just OK... nothing spectacular but very nice. The attraction here is the flea market on the first Sunday of each month. Lots of 'antiques' and artifacts, this is a great place just to nose around a bit. This can easily be included as part of a day out with Harajuku (Ura Hara and Cat Street), Omotesando, Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park.

Not much going for this shrine....just a local Harajuku experience, but I bought an amazing treasure there many years ago. The dealer was not familiar wit the signature, but I recognized it as a very early Raku piece from Kyoto. Maybe first or second generation, and I paid Y 12500. No box, of course. It's a fun experience because the dealers are really nice people and the shrine is cute.

After the hustle and bustle of the food and shopping streets the Togo Shrine was a place that we found accdently and a welcoming break from the crowded streets and like a lot of shrines in Japan they are so quite even considering they are only a few steps away from the throngs of people

This shrine is quite well kept and honors Marshall Togo for the Japanese naval victory over the Russian Baltic Fleet which essentially ended the Russo=Japanese War.

Harajuku can be a bit crazy- even the sometimes tranquil Meiji Jingu shrine is bonkers at the weekend. Don't even start on Takeshita-Dori- elbow to elbow with people browsing the neon stores. Togo Shrine is therefore a welcome spot of peace and quiet in the area. The shrine itself is like many others across Japan- differentiated perhaps by the lovely colourful Koi Carp in the lake and the terrapins. Occasional Shinto weddings on Sundays involve beautiful processions and unusual instruments.
I always stop by if I'm in the area but wouldn't travel to the area especially for it.

Admiral Togo Heihachiro (former Japanese hero of Navy) is enshrined at the Togo Shrine. This is located near Harajuku station (walk in 5 minutes). He joined the navy in Satsuma clan in 1800's, studied abroad as a navy trainee. He is famous for solve international conflict during the Sino-Japanese War in 1894-1895. Admiral Heiachiro Togo hoisted the Z flag aboard his flagship Mikasa immediately before engaging Admiral Rozhestvensky's Russian Baltic Fleet at Tsushima Straits on May 27, 1905.

The Togo Shrine is a beautiful and peaceful shrine, nearby the madness of Harajuku and the Meji Shrine. Nice for another shrine stamp in your goshuin notebook. Don't forget to check the turtles and koi in the pond.
