The area
Neighbourhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

Many people don’t know this but I have become a big fan of Steven Yeun!! I think he’s very good but I feel bad for him because he had very crazy death scenes in the Walking Dead and Nope!! My mom told me to watch Beef on Netflix so I will and hopefully he doesn’t get swallowed by a UFO or beaten by Jeffrey Dean Morgan!! If you haven’t figured out why I’m going on this rant it’s because he was born in Seoul!! I want to go to Seoul and Busan one day but I am broke and plane tickets are a ton of money!! I am in Tokyo and was looking up areas and decided to come here since it is a Koreatown!! I walked around a lot and went to Korean stores and got some apple soda!! It was a good time so you all should come here!!

we had a fantastic time with Alejandro showing us a part of Tokyo we would never have found on our own . The food was great and our food restrictions were easily accommodated . The bars we visited were alot of fun and we got to meet some local people . I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone visiting Tokyo.

On my latest trip to Japan, we stayed near Shin-Okubo, and went there twice, to have a lovely korean bulgogi/bbq. I have been to South Korea a few years ago, and really loved it there. Food wise, one of the things I really loved, was the korean bbq, where you grill your meat on a grill on your table, and then wrap it into a salad leave, and may add some ingredients like kimchi, garlic, gochugang, pickled radish etc. What I loved in South Korea, I found here, and that was great.

...and also if you're claustrophobic. The whole street is lined up with shops selling either a) KPop merchandise b) Korean cosmetics (Faceshop, Etude House, etc) or c) Korean fashion accessories. We were quite disappointed since we kept on walking around, braving through the crowded streets, but we just kept seeing those kinds of shops. I say skip it if you're not into the whole Korean culture and shopping.

My kids are all into K-pop so this was a fantastic place to find all the merchandise they wanted - can't easily obtain any of these in Australia. Prices were ok, selection was massive and certainly pleased the kids visiting this area. Even had the opportunity to have good old KFC (Korean friend chicken) for dinner - lots of fun!

For a moslem, ts very easy to find a halal food in this area, just 2 minutes walk from the station, you can find indian, thailand and indonesian restaurants here. We can pray at the small mosque here at 4th floor, there's a 100 coin shop also close to the station

Definitely a place for the Kpop lovers or Kdrama lovers, from cyclist to signboards, all in Korean Characters, restaurants, bibimbap, kimbap hawkers, stores open till midnight, lively Korean town. Every 10-20 steps you can see stores packed with Japanese Kpop fans, shopping to get their Kpop posters. Korean at the market, living their everyday life as if its Korea.

Must visit if you like the Korean Culture/Tradition or Kpop.

I have been going to Koreatown for 18 years, but it really started to boom and become wildly popular in the last few years. It is a fun place to go and have a great inexpensive meal(bibimbap, chijimi, kimchi and chap chae) as well as street food. From the Shin-Okubo station come out and turn right. The two streets running parallel have shops and restaurants on both sides. If you stay on the right side of the street there is a narrow road that you can take turn right on and there are kioks and more shops. Keep going and there is a large Don Quiote. The end of the road on the right and left side are more shops(think of it as a giant letter "H"). These roads have the Korean grocery stores on both sides of the street. There are many cosmetic stores with face creams, face masks and all the new products from Korea. Many of the cosmetic items have directions on them in English. There are lots of fun shops to poke around in. You will see a lot of teens as the "idol shops" are also a big part of this area. It is a fun 1/2 day activity.

We stayed at the Hanabi Hotel and was a 3 minute walk to the train station. It is a wonderful area as it is so central. The train is easy - one line goes to Shinjuku, the other to Ueno. JR Yamonote line is one big circle so if you remember that Ueno is at 2 o'clock and Shinjuku at 8 o'clock you will never get lost. JR Yamonote line is green and at the station ticket machine no.5 is in English. We were in Tokyo for 8 days and used this line a few times per day and we had 25 AUD on our Suica card each. The area is full of convenience stores so you can grab pre-made meals and try the sandwiches. They are the best you will ever eat. You have to try the "UFO" chicken...... Fried chicken that comes out on a round, heavy skillet with cheese in the middle. There is fairy floss in animal shapes, amazing Street food and plenty of stores selling beauty products from Korea. It is one stop from Shinjuku and not as crazy. It is also completely safe. Halal foods are also on offer with a row of shops and grocery stores all halal safe. You will love it here.
