Sugamo has shops for the older set. There are all kinds of shops from household, clothing, food, etc. The street is deceptively long. We walked the entire route to the (Koshizuka Street). Don't turn back. There's a old fashion trolley at the end that takes you to a major subway station. Saves a long walk back.

A place to visit in an evening. Nice shops and restaurants. Very enjoyable. We found there a shop where they sold purses made from scarves; those purses are very typical and unique, a cheap yet classy gift.

Lots of old people around, very quiet. Only here because my work found me a hotel here. But if you're in the area check out the shrines. Only 2 stops from Ikebukuro and about 15 min to Shinjuku on the Yamanote line if you're looking for somewhere cheap (for Tokyo) and reasonably central to stay.

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighbourhood Profile
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
