Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

My friend and I went to this little shopping centre, as we were looking for certain product at “Matsu-kiyo” drug store. But the store there was too small to stock what I wanted. The convenient store had a few in stock, but the price was higher.

After having had our lunch at Makabeya in Esola, we went down to the basement by lift. So we came out to the passage that led to Echika Ikebukuro. it’s a small shopping area near the Fuku-toshin-sen Subway Ikebukuro Station.

In Sapporo, where heavy snow is frequent in winter, such underground malls make a lot of sense. More generally, it is a trend of the last ten years or so to let commuters do their shopping without straying much from their main train station. From that point of view, Echika is convenient, without competing with Hikarie in Shibuya, which brings the same concept to another dimension.

We went down the steps of the 1a entrance, that was beyond Ikebukuro West Entrance Park. But it was a big mistake, as it was far away from the Echika shopping area. We should have taken the passage to the Fuku-toshin-sen subway entrance under Tobu Department Store.

This is another shopping mall in the train station. While Ecute is owned by JR Kanto, Echika is owned by Tokyo Metro (Underground). Echika is a combination of Japanese words: “E” is pronounced ‘e’ for ‘eki” (station) in Japanese, but has the meaning of “ii” (good) when it’s pronounced the letter “E” in English. “Chika” means underground in Japanese. They also hoped for “Excellent” and “Exciting” shopping experience. I needed to follow the map to locate a particular shop, as it’s spread out along the different underground passages.
