Neighbourhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

When we visited in June there were no concerts scheduled because of maintenace, I think. Howver, there wer two exhibitions, an Ikebana, live flower arrangements, and a photographic exhibition that were worth seeing. On a previous visit we attended a lunch time concert for 600yen. It was a stunning performance and we had hoped to do that again. Note the free shuttle to the Chinzanso Hotel gardens and to Disneyland leaves from outside this building.

While staying at Hotel Metropolitan, I found the post office in this building very convenient, as there isn’t any other post office nearby.

I saw NOH "Tsuchigumo" at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in the end of April. It was a lot of fun. Japanese spider man appeared on the stage. It was authentic and classical spider man. English tablet service was provided and it was useful. The theatre is easy to find, quite near IKEBUKURO station.

Was invited to listen to the renowned 28 year old maestro Hiroyuki Mito conducting the Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Orchestra at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. This was my first time visiting the theater after it was renovated and opened to the public on September 1st 2012. The facade is impressive if you are into architecture but some feel it is a waste of space.

Honestly, I am not into classical music but will never turn down an opportunity to listen to a live performance. The Metropolitan Theater is one of the best places to enjoy music & performing arts. The Orchestra enthralled us with pieces from Felix Mendelssohn's ~ Fingal's Cave , Georges Bizet's ~ Carmen and Brahms ~ 3rd Symphony.

High on music we needed to come down to earth. The Belgian beer cafe ~ 'Belg Aube' on the ground floor is a good place to unwind or you could head right across the theater to 'Gorilla Coffee' ~ a hipster cafe from Brooklyn, always packed with youngsters. We decided to stop by the coffee shop and experience the mighty strong Gorilla coffee take us to another higher dimension !

I've been here on my night walk around the Ikebukuro area. Not expected to see this huge theatre. The lights at night make the facade looks grand and spectacular.

Coincidentally, audiences just finished watching the theatre and make that night feel more live with peoples and feel safe too.

On the day I checked out Hotel Metropolitan, a friend of mine came to spend the rest of my time with me till I caught a limousine bus to Haneda Airport.
Each of us bought own lunch and went to Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. On the ground floor near the escalator there were a few tables and chairs, which were free to be used by the public. So we sat down and had our lunch.
After the lunch, we decided to explore the building. On the ground floor, there was a gift shop with various kinds of interesting items (not a kind of junky stuff) for sale. There was a sign in the shop that no photography was allowed. There was also a post office, a box office and a café on the ground floor.
Then, we went up to the 5th floor by escalator. In the large gallery near the entrance of the concert hall, there was an exhibition of calligraphy. It was interesting to see how each artist expressed his/her writing in his/her own artistic way. There was another café on this floor.
Next, we went down to the basement to see the exhibition of paintings and photos in two small galleries. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

It's impressive rectangular glass frame entrance hall, make its appeareance from once you are in the square. inside the vast open area impress you.
The think I didn't like was that we weren't able to communicate with none of the employees, since no one speaks english.
