I am very pleased with my individual workshop/session with Alfie Goodrich. It was my first opportunity with a model and was very challenging. I learned a lot from Alfie. His explanations of photography were easy to absorb and implement. He is a very patient and enthusiastic teacher and an extremely talented photographer. He enjoys his work and time spent with him is a pleasure.

Al had a great plan for including all of Kamakuras strengths while avoiding the tourist mobs. Very few of my photos included unintended tourists. It was really well thought out. Very organized and thorough. We arrived mid morning(suns a little too high), we were perfectly positioned on the back side of a hill in a shaded temple. Then a short hike over a hill to more shaded temples. If we needed more light we had reflectors. Then the beach just before golden hour and sunset. We ended with a light yakitori meal and beers well after dark. Al is very generous with his time. Kamakura is the perfect backdrop/complement for the shoot:

Natural Setting.
Temples.
Beach.
Sunset.
Mt. Fuji.
Yakitori Stands.

Prior to this session my experience in photography was mostly with auto focus zooms. I brought a couple of manual focus primes along and started using them immediately. My composition started to wander and Alfie pointed it out without being overbearing. He is a good verbal communicator, answering questions on a level that is understood. He has even gotten me interested in Black and white. At least half of my photos are now monochrome and I rarely touch my auto focus zooms now. It really was a fantastic learning experience.

If Kamakura is not a subject you would be interested in, I am sure he could tailor a workshop that would be more of interest to you with numerous themes:

Street Photography/Tokyo
Architectural/Tokyo
Industrial Locations/Tokyo
Temples/Kyoto
Nature/Rural Japan

His sessions really are a bargain and he is very generous with his time. He is:

Teacher.
Scout.
Fixer.
Interpreter.

If this type of work shop is of interest to you, I can not recommend him enough.
