Interesting
Feb 2020
The tour was only available in French as it’s not peak season, but my son was over so the 3 of us went to see it. very interesting and well worth the 8€ each. The mines itself were very cool and interesting. And even though in French we managed to understand most of what was being said.
We will definitely do the tour again when in English. Worth a visit.

Quality tour
Oct 2019
We did not expect to find a site with such historical value as the Mines d'Argent in Melle.
The silver mine there helped fund King Charlamage and the Carolingian empire.
the tour lasts around two hours and explains the processes of the mine in great detail.
Our guide was English but had perfect French.
If you are in Melle, it's well worth a visit.

Mine Visit
Aug 2019
Weren't sure what to expect - but we had a great visit to the mine and learnt a lot. Jeff our guide was fluent in English and French and did the tour in both languages. Well worth a visit if in the area
Our 15 year old thought it was great - 13 year old - not so sure - but not really his sort of thing!
Both adults thought is was great and good value for money

Fascinating historical experience that will charm all who go. The tour was insightful and interesting with just the right amount of information. We had our daughter with us and at just a little over 18 months she was not as interested as we were but she was still engaged enough to be led around the underground part without becoming bored due to the stalactites and stalagmites and the opportunity to roam through the opened up areas.

Charming and fascinating visit

We decided to visit the mines after spotting them on Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed. They are situated in the pretty village of Melle (wandering around Melle is an activity in itself) and are beautifully run by a delightful team.

The tours are guided and we (English family) were lucky enough to have the amazing Rachel as our guide. She was brilliant - informative and immensely patient (considering the 4 and 2 year in the tour party), engaging the entire group regardless of age. The 3D videos, while in French, where easy to follow and gave us a good idea of what to see in the mines.

Overall an excellent trip, ideal for rainy days or extremely hot days (caves are cool). Thank you Rachel for a great afternoon.

Oldest silver mine in Europe
Jun 2019 • Friends
The mines date from between 600 -1000AD and are the oldest in France. The silver was used to produce the denier coin which has been found throughout Western Europe. It is unknown how many workers were here however the mines stretch for at least 30km.
Approx three grams of silver could be extracted from sulphur and lead deposits.
We were lucky to have been guided by Rachel who is British and provided the tour in English only for just four Brits.
The tour was highly engaging and the mines are beautiful. You will see the air holes where both smoke and oxygen entered the mine. There is a beautiful water pool and mineral deposits of limestone.
After the understanding tour of 45 minutes you get to understand the arduous and long process it would have taken to produce the silver.

Superb guide who spoke fluent English.

Went on this tour 2 days ago, all of our party were English speaking (Canadian and English) so we had Jeff who is fluent in both English and French as our tour guide.
There are two short 3D films at the beginning and end of the tour (10 & 8 minutes respectively) and although they are in French they are pretty self explanatory. Jeff then gave us a recap in English.
The tour of the mine was very interesting and not hurried, Jeff took his time answering all of our questions. Some members of our tour had experience of other forms of mining (coal, tin, aluminium etc) so some of the questions were a bit more technical but these didn’t faze Jeff at all.
At the moment there is an art exhibition around the region and two pieces of art are displayed deep in the mine tunnels, one from an Cypriot artist using copper from a copper mine in Cyprus and the other from Yoko Ono (from her own private collection) which was an added bonus.
Outside are examples of how the ore was extracted, broken down and the silver separated (apparently they also do live demonstrations once a year).
There is a small gift shop selling stones, jewellery and mementos at very reasonable prices.
Well worth a visit :)

Trip out on rainy day
Jun 2018 • Family
Frankly due to poor weather forecasts I’d looked up what could be up our sleeves for wet day activity and sure enough on the day of almost torrential showers we decided to take refuge in the mines. Really small scale but in a charming way. The lady doing the tour couldn’t have been nicer and was so engaging. Really interesting and I even managed to get through the mine in spite of my claustrophobia (but boy was it tested as there are some tight spots!). They get lots of English visitors so knocking off a point for not have the videos translated or at least subtitles as although I speak French the rest of my group didn’t.
