About
Far from the hubbub of the main roads, nestled amidst thatched cottages in the pretty village of Chrishall, just South of Cambridge between Saffron Walden and Royston, sits The Red Cow - a picture-perfect thatched pub, ideal for your escape to the country. The Red Cow is owned & managed by Toby Didier'Serre & his partner Alexis Beeching. As a lover of fresh produce and rural sporting activities, Toby relishes his role as The Red Cow’s convivial host and ensures our guests are made to feel as welcome as possible. The recent addition of five beautifully appointed and luxurious guest rooms in the old thatched barn and post office adjacent to the pub complete the offering of great food, wine, atmosphere and rooms. But don't take our word for it. Take a look at the pictures and book a table or a room.

What a fantastic place. The rooms are beautifully appointed, awesome shower, incredibly comfortable bed and a room with all the neccesary accompaniment's from tea and coffee, cookies, fresh milk, toiletries etc. The pub itself is beautiful and in winter you are greeted inside by a log fire, real ales and friendly staff. Food was exceptional both in the evening and for breakfast, and I look forward to staying here every month when I am working in the area - fantastic place..............

We were assured that there would be "specials" on the menu. 11 people for a very special event travelled up to 20 miles to get there. No "specials" and part of the basic menu unavailable. The only redeeming feature, the staff, two young girls who were excellent. Very disappointed and could not recommend.

I really don’t know where to start, there is just so much one could say about this very special place, The Red Cow. The setting and decor are lovely, the staff always friendly, and the food is very good indeed. It it as warm and welcoming as the beautiful open fire when you walk
In.

I’d already eaten at the Red Cow on a few occasions but this was the first visit since the start of the pandemic. We visited in a family group for a birthday lunch. The pub is in a tucked away location with excellent dog walks all around. It’s frequented by ramblers, so I’d suggest getting there early to avoid the rush at the bar. It’s cosy and welcoming with a wood burning stove, which is great on a cold winter’s day and is a real village pub with a small grocery shop on site and it feels like it’s at the heart of the community. The pub also has the added advantage of serving excellent food. It had just reopened after a short post Christmas break, so the lunch menu wasn’t huge but what we had was excellent and freshly prepared. The large portion of fish and chips was enormous, so only order if you have a big appetite! The fish was delicious, fresh and well cooked. The portion of scampi was generous and the scampi were large. The chips, both potato and sweet potato were good but we particularly enjoyed the crushed peas, which were delicious and unusual.
All the puddings were good but a particular mention must be made of the warm chocolate Toblerone brownie which was wonderfully gooey.
The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, conjuring up a candle on the birthday pudding.
Well done Red Cow, you are a great little pub.

Exceeds all expectations. Stayed here with friends as we were attending Audley House. Everything was perfect. The room was spotless. The beds were comfortable with lovely crisp white bedding. The bathroom was pristine all toiletries were provided as well as bathrobes. We had Sunday lunch before we left and it was perfect. The staff and manager go above and beyond to make your stay a wonderful experience.

Had a fantastic time last night at Red Cow! Haven’t eaten there in a while, because of the mad world we’ve been living through!!(although it’s in me doorstep!). Thank you Alexis Didier Serre and Toby Didier'serre . Staff, atmosphere and surroundings are brilliant and the food was excellent! Toby is back as head chef at the mo moment and it’s exceptional!!
Highly recommended!!

We stayed at the Red Cow after a trip to Duxford and I can’t recommend it enough. The rooms, were clean, immaculately presented and a lovely little touch being in the foyer area was a bowl of fresh fruit and a small fridge with additional bottled water should it be needed by guests.

The food was first class, the drinks and beer selections were top rate and the staff were a joy to chat to and were very attentive.

All in all, we’ll definitely go back, and it was such an amazing visit.

We stayed at the Red Cow for 4 nights while cycling and walking in Cambridgeshire.
The pub was set up very well for Social distancing and the food and drinks were great.
Breakfast was outstanding with the local sausages and the Ducks eggs particularly notable.
The accommodation is outstanding, of a really high standard and the room staff were very helpful
