About
The Diri Baba Mausoleum, located in the Gobustan region of Azerbaijan, is a stunning example of ancient architecture that dates back to the 15th century. This cylindrical mausoleum, built of stone, has an unusual shape, resembling a beehive with a conical dome. It is a significant historical and cultural landmark, not only because of its architectural uniqueness but also because it houses the tomb of the Sufi mystic and hermit Diri Baba. Legend has it that Diri Baba lived a solitary life of contemplation and meditation, gaining a reputation for his profound spirituality and wisdom. His tomb, housed within the mausoleum, has become a site of pilgrimage for those seeking solace, guidance, and blessings.

Diri Baba Mausoleum, Qubostan Azerbaijan: 15th century mausoleum of Diri Baba, a faithful Muslim is built in a glyptic cave. It was also a mosque where devout flocked to, post his death. The bright smooth surface, purity of lines stand out in the stunning mountains. It is characteristic of the school of Shrivan architecture and as cramped as the space is, it’s an architecture marvel. #eatstylishtravelstylish

This is a 2-storied mausoleum of Sheikh Diri Baba built in the 15th Century. It is a steep climb going up. It was very well kept and visitors were allowed to enter and stay as long as they want. The interior was very small and very clean. It was in a remote but scenic area. It is across the street from the Old Cemetery. The architecture was interesting. The windows were ornate. There were seats by the window so you could see out. When we visited, there was a broom inside which gave me the impression that there was a caretaker of some sort. The building looked like it was built at the edge of the mountain or a huge piece of rock. I took several photographs of the exterior and interior. As we descended, we were met by a young boy (he said he was 12) selling fresh herbs for tea making or cooking. I had no way to use them so I paid him for a bag of the herbs and gave him some pens and pencils. This is definitely worth a stop.

It was an interesting site, well worth stopping off for a look. It's a bit of an anomaly as, as I understand it, in the Muslim religion there are not supposed to be monuments / shrines, etc to people. This one is to a wise, good man and seems to get around the rules.

The Diri Baba Mausoleum in Qobustan south of Baku is an incredibly beautiful memorial to the Sheikh. Small but ornate, clean, quiet (as a mausoleum should be) it was a marvel to behold on the rocks and to see how peaceful it was too. Built into the cliff face it is not gaudy and the climb to the top is very accessible for most people. Truly a lovely experience.

One of the best in Azerbijian. The stairs are pretty narrow and stiff. Walk all the way to the top if you are able to.

The valley is located next to Maraza Village and is worth a stop when travelling to Western Azerbaijan.
The history is mixed but the location offers a decent photo op.
