Visitors will only see a small part along a well marked track. There are thousands of engravings, dating back tens of thousands of years. Some carvings stand out clearly, others need pointing out - and it helps if you have a good guide with you. The views over the Caspian Sea are splendid from this height.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 October 2023
- Moskvichka12Moscow, Russia615 contributionsAMAZINGI only ended up here because the tour I booked was cancelled, but oh my goodness I'm glad I saw this! There are rock carvings in many parts of the world, but these are so striking and well preserved, and you can get right up close. There are very many, spread out over quite an area, but on a Saturday there are hundreds of tourists, so it can take time to see them all. The views over the area from the top of the rocks is very impressive, and if you have a good guide, like we did, he'll tell you about chasing huge bulls over the cliffs! There is also a tambourine rock - an incredible phenomenon of a musical rock. You can try out some sounds yourself. Really very worth visiting, should be on everyone's list!Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 May 2024
- Milind ShahAhmedabad, India2,020 contributionsA walk into the HistoryOne of the serene and historic places to visit in Azerbaijan. The place is hardly an hour's drive from Baku. There are petroglyphs from the human civilizations carved into the rock which are believed to be 40,000 years old. The carvings are very interesting and surely give a great throwback into how civilizations used to survive such long ago. Apart from the rocks and carvings, the place also offers a great view of the Caspian Sea. The site is well managed, and the pathways are clearly identified to prevent people from damaging the heritage. A must visit site if you are in and around Azerbaijan.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 May 2024

Prehistoric line carvings (we are talking about stick man type) depict animals, people (why are women without limbs?!), rituals and life 5000 to 20,000 years ago. It’s a sweltering hot day and you’re not just battling the heat. You also may chance upon scorpions and snakes. Of interest is the cliff face that resembles Lion King. #eatstylishtravelstylishVisited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 June 2024

There are toilets at the beginning of the track but besides that there are little infrastructure. Prepare to be out in the sun for a while!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 July 2024

About 5 or 6 sites with original rock art a 15min walk from the museum. The art is pretty faded and it takes some time to distinguish them from the erosion lines. The museum is more catered towards kids with many interactive exhibits but it wasn't as in depth as I had hoped given the rich history of the place. The place is also pretty out of the way with no public transport nearby. It is necessary to get a taxi to the site.

Magnificent site and very easy to access even once inside. This place is full of history and very well designed. I recommend going to the museum beforehand which is very fun and very good for better understanding once again for both young and old. The pictograms are omnipresent on the rocks and the walk is sumptuous. The little extra: a magnificent panorama to discover. A must-see in Azerbaijan.

Gobustan (Qobustan - land of ravines), an archaeological reserve south of Baku, famous for its rock paintings.
Petroglyphs, ancient sites, and inhabited caves have been preserved since the Stone Age. They have been known to Russian scientists since 1840. Archaeological excavations have been carried out since 1930. Inscriptions were found in Latin and Persian, which proves that Vasya was here
The Romans reached these lands, considered this ever-burning land, saturated with oil and salt, unsuitable for life and returned home.
One interesting thing: based on the petroglyphs found, the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl suggested that the Vikings came from the Caspian lands. In short, Azerbaijani oil blood flows in the veins of Norwegians, Danes and Swedes.

Very interesting site, with use dating back an estimated 40,000 years. Carvings are thought to range from 20,000 to 5,000 years old.
If you spend some time at the museum below the carvings, no need for a guide. Pretty easy to spot carvings.
This is about an hour and a half drive from Baku, so suggest combining it with a visit to the museum Gobustan “ mud volcanoes.”

Terrific little museum and then after a short drive (or 25min walk) the excellent site with easily walkable trails with explanatory boards/
An easy drive an hour south of Baku. No guide needed but plenty available if you feel the need. Small entrance fee. Allow about 90-120 mins for a reasonable visit.

The museum and rock art are well worth a visit. The museum was informative, interesting and modern. The displays were well presented with a few interactive displays. I am not usually a great fan of museums, but I enjoyed my visit. The sheer number of rock wall drawings were impressive. We did go in Februaury, so there were only a few visitors, so probably a good time to go.

I went in mid July.
Shahdag can be bright and sunny one day and cold, wet and windy the next day. Be prepared for both, and carry warm clothes.
Gabala was pleasant, not very hot.
