Taking a trip to Wenchi Crater Lake is a nice choice for spending your weekend vacation. Wenchi Crater Lake is 155 km west of Addis Ababa, between Ambo and Weliso. An extinct volcano, the top of which is 3380 meters above sea level, is a crater that contains a large lake, hot mineral springs, waterfalls, beautiful valleys and farmland. There is an old monastery with a church situated on one of the lake islands

I believe my images from this trip stood up much better than my frist trips to Ethiopia.
My guide Yonas, who is alos a verey safe driver and all the local guides were very attentive and did a wonderful job in assisting me during my entire trip. To get inside the lake and to the church in Christmas morning with thousands of people already there was un-think of task.
I strongly recommend Yonas and his crew if you are looking for a unique trip to this wonderful lake

Based on many recommendations here, i got Yonas (+251 976389898 on whats app its his number for whats app you could just call him or send sms
I highly recommend Yonas I took 2 different trips with him, the first 1 day trip outside of Addis to lake wenchi and the second all day trip in Addis. In both trips the driver guide( Yonas) was great professional and very kind. He took me the the special authentic places and do everything to satisfy me. Highly recommend
If you haven't been to a market in Africa before, Mercato is a must, nothing like the others in the rest of the world, and it would be the highlight of your trip in Addis. It is another world outside of this one.

Yonas is very kind and as a Driver guide he know everything about Wenchi and the history of the Monastery!! lot of things about the place and motivate us during the trekking. He is also friendly to every one at the village he knows everybody we felt very safe during our stay with Him The Lake is is absolutely amazing, the lake is so clean you can even swim so much green and relaxing! You feel absorbed in the silence, you can only ear the sounds of birds. you can see also baboons, coulomb's monkey

Road in from either Ambo or Woliso is a bumpy 2hrs to say the least...but beautiful countryside. All the locals want to be your tour guide, better to insist on speaking with the park office worker to pay with receipt entrance and parking fees. We opted to stay at the top lookout rather than hike/horseback ride down to the lake. Have been to the bottom and across on a dug out canoe before, an adventure to be sure, but need to have lots of time & energy. Beautiful vistas & a great picnic spot, it's just unfortunate to be overwhelmed by the locals. Usually breezy all year round best to dress in layers. No food/snacks/water to be purchased locally, bring whatever you may need. Very little tourist infrastructure, look forward to more appropriate eco development.

When you travel with Yonas you immediately realize that you are getting more than a tour guide. You are traveling with a friendly and passionate local Ethiopian who is happy to share the beauty of his country as well as his wealth of insight into the local culture.
I was traveling with my wife and teenage daughter and we each had different locations and activities that interested us. Yonas helped us discover the unique Ethiopian experiences we were each looking for.
My family and I could not have chosen a better guide, and after traveling to five African countries and meeting several friends and guides along the way, Yonas is among the best of both and I highly recommend him for your time in Ethiopia.

Jonas was a fantastic guide- caring, kind, great with the service , and full of wonderful information. was also an incredible driver and helped make everything feel easy. he is a great guide and went above and beyond to get us every experience we wanted (including city Tour ). Wenchi crater lake is one of the places to visit near Addis. Since the distance from Addis is 120km, this make it feasible for a day trip. The beautiful nature says about it, the feeling also stays for long.

What an amazing experience out in this beautiful nature of wenchi me and my family had an amazing time in this beautiful and breathtaking area Yonas was our guide through this journey and he was very open and very sociable guy and easy to connect with. The journey started from my place Yonas pick us up and started the journey from there on the way we had some nice convention and very comfortable car as well i don't want to say a lot so you can see for yourself and enjoy the feeling. overall i would recommend for everyone to go and see this beautiful nature.

As some of the other travelers who left a comment here, I booked a day trip with Yonas. I was traveling alone as a woman and felt in perfect hands with him. Extremely reliable, knowledgeable, great energy and attentive to the traveler's wish or needs. This really changed my stay and I went for another day trip to the Menagesha forest. I would have booked more days with him if I had time. Strongly recommended!

Sorry, only just seen the question - hope I'm not too late! It's a couple of hours, depending on traffic in Addis which can be busy. It's easy to visit in a day if you're short of time but better if you get a chance to spend longer and take time to walk around. I believe you can walk all the way around in about 5 hours but there are lots of shorter walks you can do. I swam in it this visit!
