- David SMelbourne, Australia7 contributionsCrazy early start but well worth itThis was one of the nicest things we did on our fantastic holiday in Sri Lanka. We decided to organize a tuktuk to take us to the top to watch the sun rise and we had the most perfect weather with views for miles. It was a truly magical and quite emotional experience. After tea at the little tea house at the top we walked down to the tea factory which, what with the lack of health and safety measures and the fact that nothing has changed there in probably 75 years, was the best factory tour that I have ever done. Lastly some time spent talking with a bunch of tea picking ladies who were very open and welcoming to us gave us further insight into their daily lives. Thoroughly well worth the crazy early start.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024
- sudhira srAbu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates18 contributionsAdventures driveBeautiful drive through the tea plantation As roads are small and broken at some places driving is dangerous. Once you reach the mountain top it’s a beautiful view. Three wheelers tuktuk are the best to drive there. The tea shop isn’t hygienic, so better to avoid having tea from there Buy vegetables and fresh fruits on the way. Enjoy the driveVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024
- Esther K2 contributionsOn bike to the topWe went from Haputale on a scooter. Me, a 43 year old mum and 15 year old son on the back. I am not the best scooterdriver, but it was doable. Only the last bit between the ticket office and liptonseat was sometimes not very good road. But doable. We started around 7 in Haputale, arrived around 8 on lipton seat. Because we where early, we had a very good view. We had breakfast in the cafe on top. Walked around and when we left at ten o clock it was cloudy. So make sure you go early. Breakfast was cheap and good, with Lipton tea. The way towards is nice to see the teapickers in action. The way back we enjoyed driving in the clouds and smelling clouds and tea mixed together. Absolutely worth it!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024

By Tuk Tuk the 16 kms up to Lipton seat felt precarious at times, with bumpy and narrow roads. But seeing the tea plantation covering every square inch was awe inspiring. We had a wonderful drivers who was quite funny and knowledgeable and whose English was very good. 6000 feet above sea level we were above clouds and the views were spectacular. It was a Sunday so no one was working but people were going about their daily routine.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024

Very nice view even though it was cloudy, the way up was absolutely amazing. However we could gave skipped the café. The workers lured us in which was expected but it was unnecessarily expensive for a cup of tea and some small portion of Rotti. When we paid the waiter refused to give me the change because I'm a woman and insisted on waiting for my fiancé which i found upsetting, and then he expected a tip.

Stunning views over huge area of tea plants . Liptons height is on 1900 meters. You can see the picking of the tea leaves by women. They earn 40 rupees per kilo. They pic up to19 Kilo a day. You can se the very old fashion factory following how the tea is dried cut and fermented.
It was really worthwhile to go there.

Lipton's seat is a scenic view point situated at the edge of Dambethenna tea estate. Sir Thomas Lipton was used to enjoy the view from this place when he was at Dambethenna estate. The place is situated about 15 km from the town. Haputhale-Dambethenna buses go till Dambethenna tea factory. You can get a tuk-tuk from Dambethenna tea factory or walk though tea estate (It is about 6 km but there are short cuts) to reach the place. You can get view of five province from Lipton's seat. There is a separate observation desk built at more higher place. Better visit there at morning hours as it takes only few minutes to cover the view with mist.
It is worth to visit at Dambethenna tea factory as well.

A recommended early morning walk to watch the sunrise over the mountains.
The light on the tea plantations is enchanting.
Going there by tuk-tuk almost to the top then making the descent to the factory on foot, crossing the plantations, the gathering villages that bustle in the early morning is worth the detour.
Meet children who join their school in uniform.
Allow a few pens or notebook to donate to the school you pass by can be a good thing for the locals too.

We did this the lazy way with a bone rattling tuk-tuk ride to the top and then back down.
Beautiful views, absolutely breath-taking, photographs don’t do it justice you need to see it to believe. With a morning visit, with bright sun and clear skies you can see all the way to the southern beaches of Sri Lanka from here.
It actually got a bit cold when we visited and we were glad that the lookout at the top asked us if we wanted some team & rottis 😎
Some hot food and drink was most welcome!
Thoroughly recommend.

Pretty good views. 550 rupee entrance fee per person feels a little steep, like the climb (we walked there from Haputale), but rather underwhelming. The tea in the little cafe at the top was nice though. As it should be on one of Sri Lanka’s premium tea estates…

Unfortunately, the overcast weather did not allow us to enjoy the view but the atmosphere was nevertheless "mystical"! It's a place very exposed to the wind, fortunately there is a small shelter with the possibility of having tea (quite bad though). We went up there in a tuktuk for sunrise (missed) but we think it's worth the effort of waking up in the early morning. In addition, it is a good starting point for a magnificent walk through the plantations (the clouds have gradually left), even with overcast weather the atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. Take the opportunity to go to the Dambatenne factory.

Is it possible to reach liptons seat by a car(aqua)???
Written 16 April 2019
Yes, You can. But the road is very narrow & crossing over with another vehicle coming from opposite direction is very hard. And parking space at the top is limited.

I have been in Lipton's Seat 3 three times since 2014 and noticed only bus which goes to Bandaraeliya(Tamil Community) so had to get off at the crossroads. I took the right fork all the way up and paid a fee to pass the gate. Some told me that he experienced a bus that could drop him off at the pass gate. Have anyone of you seen the bus that can drop tourist at the gate?

Bonjour,
Pouvez m'indiquer combien de temps dure la balade en Tuk Tuk sur le site Lipton's Tea.
A votre avis est'il possible de combiner un départ d'Ella, la visite du site et une arrivée à Uda Walawe le soir.
Merci
Yves

HI i would like to visit Lipton’s seat from Ella - I know this is doable but as a backpacker I can’t afford private taxi from Ella. The train gets into haputale at 7:40am (if on time) and then a tuktuk up to the view point. So my question is if I get this train // and tuk would I get to the top before the fog? Or is it fogged over by 8:30/9am?
Thanks!!

The bus leaves from the square about 300-400 m from the train station. No need to get a tuktuk. I got the bus at 9am from Haputale to Dambatenne which is about 10 kms and hiked the remaining 6 or 7 kms. Guess i reached Liptons Seat by noon and the view was still exceptional. The red bus only goes as far as Dambatenne but there are other smaller white buses that go all the way to Lipton's Seat. Not sure if they leave from exactly the same place as the red bus, but just ask when you get there. The buses leave about every 30 mins and cost 30-40 rps.

Bonjour Josiane,
