We were walking a loop from Sandsend; through Mulgrave Woods to Mulgrave Castle and then around to join the Cleveland Way so we could walk the Geocache Art Trail enroute back to Sandsend carpark. We had so much fun finding the geocache boxes and highly recommend if you're in the area.

There are many different trails through the woods to explore. The woods are just so picturesque, with the sunlight falling through the leaves and the crunchy leaves underfoot. The paths were mostly very good, despite all the rain we've had recently. Beautiful woods to explore.

Then the ruins of the castle are just an added bonus! Most of the trails through the woods seem to lead to the castle, but we used OS Maps just to check we were going in the right direction. There is an information plaque with a little history of the castle as you walk around the outside wall. There is only one entrance into the castle grounds, up a couple of steps. The ruins are not large, we spent maybe half an hour exploring, including stopping for snacks/drinks on the wall to soak up the views.

We saw only a few people, and most of these near to the castle, which was surprisingly considering how busy Sandsend always is. Walking boots are recommended, despite the paths mostly being excellent, as we walked a little further afield and leaving the woods from opposite direction we had to walk through a small stream! Thankfully our boots are waterproof!

Please note: Mulgrave Woods are only accessible on Wednesdays and Saturdays/Sundays. It is definitely worthwhile trying to plan your week around a walk here if at all possible.

We paid £5.10 for 6 hours carparking via the app at Sandsend, the main carpark next to Wits End Cafe. I think it was only around £1 more to park all day. There are free toilets here to use.

We have stayed in the Whitby area many, many times & have never visited these woods before. I did a search for wheelchair friendly walks for this visit & these woods were suggested. We did manage with a regular wheelchair but the terrain was very rocky & difficult to manoeuvre through in places, probably more suited to an all terrain chair. It was a bright Sunday (access to general public Wed, Sat & Sun) & we managed to get to the castle ruins the views were great & we saw deer in the distance.

We parked in the car park at Sandsend and walked up through the woods. The woods are a popular walking spot but we found the castle a bit difficult to find. There is not much left of it and we had a walk round then headed back down to the car. A pleasant couple of hours.

The castle ruins are definitely the highlight of a walk through Mulgrave Wood. The walk itself took about 2 hours all in, and consisted of a broad path that loops up and around. The woods aren't particularly beautiful, and dogs have to be kept on leads, which was pretty boring for ours who loves to be off lead. There were no markers showing different routes, or options for leaving the main paths, which were muddy and full of puddles in places. Note, the woods are only accessible Wed, Sat and Sun. We paid £5.50 for 6 hours parking as we'd heard of fines being implemented if you go over your time. There are zero facilities here ie toilets.

Visited after reading others reviews about this hidden gem. Takes around 50 mins to walk from the main car park in Sandsend and then through the woodland to the castle. Quite a soggy walk through but that’s to be expected given the Autumnal weather.
The Castle was a nice spot to stop for a sandwich, but there wasn’t too much exploring to do once there.

We come here ever time we visit Whitby & Sandsend. The woodland walks around the castle are breath breaking.
Perfect walk for doggies lots of room and quieter routes for those with anxious doggies.

Cafe and carpark near bottom Sandsend entrance.

Worth a stop off :)

This is a lovely walk up to the castle ruins if you do the loop it's about 3 miles and we'll worth the trek. You just need to check the opening times as there's no access during May and then only open Saturday Sunday and Wednesday I think.

Lovely easily manageable walk through woods from car park in Sandsend near bridge to interesting restored medieval castle.Good paths taking you past wood mill and onto tunnel. Take left hand track just before reaching tunnel to reach castle. Can return by alternative route passing through tunnel and over stone bridge and follow path until arrive back near main car park in Sandsend. Took us (3 adults plus 2 children)about one and three quarter hours including time at castle.

Mulgrave Estates has three castles within its boundaries. Lord Normanby lives in his mansion, there is an earthwork motte from pre-Norman times, and finally there are the impressive restored ruins of the Norman to Medieval castle reviewed here. The castle is located on Mulgrave Estate, which is open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (closed all May). See the Mulgrave Estate website for further information.

The castle is large, and can easily be seen from google maps in the satellite view. A map of the route to the castle can be collected from Whitby's tourist information. The walk from the nearest car park to the castle takes around 30 minutes, and passes a pleasant river and tunnel. Few tourists visit this castle, mainly locals.

The castle itself has a large and high curtain wall with a main gate. There is also a well and large Donjon ruin. The views from the keep and outer wall are very good. At the right time of the year the castle is covered in snow drops.

A delightful autumn walk through well maintained woodland to the castle. Some of the less walked tracks can be muddy - and at one point we found our way impeded by a deer fence. Delightful path down to West Beck entrance worth finding.
