All advice was to book in advance - I'm glad we did, as there were signs up when we arrived saying all tours for the day were full. The tourist leaflet suggested we could book by phone, but when I phoned, there was a recorded...More

This is an amazing place to visit. From the exhibition at the entrance, a description of the site (in French) and the visit to the cave with views of some incredible pictures of animals and the iconic hand motif, done in prehistoric times. This is...More

Wow! What an experience, There aren't many caves where you can still see the original paintings up close. Booked online as recommended, as numbers are limited. All the guides speak really good English, and although we were they only non french speakers on the tour,...More

We booked ahead and on arrival were first given a film in English and met our guide. The cave is extremely interesting, with excellent depictions of animals as well as hand prints and even a very rare footprint, so that you can feel the presence...More

Pech Merle is a fantastic journey to the prehistoric world.Excellent and competent expanations by the guide. The only problem is the reservation process by internet: Take care to make sure that the date and time is OK, because there is absolutely no chance to change

Very interesting place. A special thing is that in this cave you see real - not copies - of prehistorical paintings. First you seat for a 10-15mn introduction and then follow your well trained guide for a discovery of the cave and the painting. The...More

My husband and I went in April when demand was low. Our tour was in French, which was fine because we were given an English fact sheet before entering the cave and our bilingual tour guide answered any questions we had at each viewing site....More

A very interesting tour of ancient cave paintings up to 30,000 yrs old. We booked the English guided tour well in advance. If you turn up on the day it is unlikely that you will get in! Well organised tour and good place for a...More

This is one of the last French cave were you can see original prehistorical paintings, others, such as famous Lascau, are reconstructions. This is all because of the need to protect this very fragile pieces of art. Pech Merle does not escape to the rule:...More

We loved Pech Merle. We had booked the English tour a few weeks in advance on line. Our guide spoke good English and explained everything very well. She was enthusiastic and was able to answer any questions we had. The group was large - too...More

Hi - the trick is to arrive early enough to see the video at the upper level of the attraction. It is subtitled. Otherwise, frankly, the plastic hand out is pretty useless as your guide is pointing stuff out on the walls... More

The best place to stop is Bouzies (7 km from the cave, it's the closest). Then you can go to Pech Merle by bike (be careful, the last 2 km go up strong) or by taxi (see Taxi Merle, mobile 06 03 15 41 67). You can also reach... More

I'm sorry but I do not know. The cave, however, is wonderful. If you go to the Chauvet cave in Provence, don't eat at the cafeteria. The food is awful. The cave, however, even tho it is a faux cave, is great. Have a... More
