not ovedrawn on catholic saga, it is still a decent escalated perambulation with a fair degree of pilgrimaging. It reminds one of Meteora or Mount Athos in Greece but lacking the dramatic essence. It is the jewel of the peninsula in terms of attribution, identity and sanctification but little else. The grotto cave structure and the elegant access to add to the overdeclared significance. It is properly supported, lift available for us the less able climbers but still..nothing to write home about when compared to the Colombian Salt Mine Cathedral which is again overdetermined by its cultural religious significance. The hill with its topographical prominence is all the money and the views to and especially from

We came on a Sunday and it was the last day of a pilgrimage. It was a traffic jam with lots of tour buses and people. Lots of people were just walking around the town so we were able to get into the church pretty easy. We did get into a part of mass and were able to see the museum. A very interesting visit.

A place that instills a profound serenity, the church carved into the rock is beautiful. The only flaw, if I may, is that it is not indicated how to allow people with disabilities or mobility difficulties to visit the place peacefully. Unfortunately, mum would never have been able to go down all the stairs leading to the cave. Fortunately, a lady pointed out to us the presence of elevators used for this purpose in another structure that allows access to the cave. This is why I say beautiful but....

It was quite unexpected for me to find two magnificent holy places in the area of the relatively small peninsula of Gargano. Both - Monte Sant'Angelo and San Giovanni Rotondo - are located about 700 m high on the Mount Gargano, spreading over the entire central part of the peninsula.
The special feature of this shrine is its location under the ground level. It is actually a cave which was dug in the 13th century. It can be accessed by 80 steps, luckily, not very steep. At the end of this staircase, quite unexpectedly, a large space opens and a substantial part of this space is still visibly a cave. It is a peaceful and solemn place and this is probably one good consequence of covid - not very many tourists.
It is advisable to spend some additional time in the small town of Monte Sant'Angelo. Its centre is really old, with very narrow streets and somehow deserted. The parts intended for visitors are bustling. But the nicest part of the town is the terraced slope overlooking the southern coast of the peninsula with wonderful views of the town of Manfredonia, situated by the sea.
I heard that the castle is also worth seeing, but unfortunately, I did not have a chance to go there.

A magical place, where you can breathe an authentic and ancestral faith. At times it is very crowded, especially on weekends and at certain times, but at quieter times you can enjoy the peace and beauty of the places. The museum is also very interesting.

We were lucky enough to attend a Holy Mass and the atmosphere and peace that invaded us was indescribable!
The basilica consists of an upper and a lower level. The upper level includes the Romanesque portal and the bell tower, while the lower level includes the cave, which can be reached directly via the Angevin staircase.
Really exciting 💓

I had been missing for several years and I must admit that the whole village has undergone an incredible transformation. New environments have been added to the Basilica, including an elevator, which also allows people with mobility difficulties to access the cave, the fulcrum of this basilica. a pleasant surprise.

I had been here before so I knew its beauty and charm. Unfortunately, the cultural level of those who manage it is backwards so that I was made to leave the "sacred places" because I allowed myself to want to enter with my little Yorkshire one arm, Satan in short... the nun/guard failed to consider, however, what goes into the prohibition there was no trace at the entrance, neither of the cave nor of the building. And to say that my little dog has been to San Pietro, a church and up to the dome and the upper terraces (certainly not in secret). We should know better about Saint Francis and Saint Anthony the Abbot...

We visited the Sanctuary during a very busy and packed out Sunday mass. We joined a long queue and it took a while to reach the Sanctuary but it was well worth it. It’s a spectacular church hewn out of rock. Interesting gift shop. The only negative was that we felt as though we were intruding into peoples devotions.

We were travelling from Naples to Monte Gargano, so we made a stop in Monte Sant'Angelo to see this wonderful church. It looks like a common church from outside, but the interior is really something you can't see often. So don't miss it if you are nearby.

The "must sees" are Matera and the trulli houses in Alberobello.
If you get an opportunity to visit the Gargano peninsula, (Vieste), it is also a lovely place to visit.
