If you wisely make your way to Calabria, be sure to include at least a day to visit the Sila. (Outdoors lovers, hikers, campers will want more time!) The mountains, lakes and plains and the park area are beautiful and rich with great flora and animals to see and, outside of the high lively summer holiday season, wonderfully free from tourists/tour groups.

Our first stop was the Il Gigante (the giants - a grove of very tall larch pines and mountain maples planted in the seventeenth century) and it's walking trail. Within 10 minutes, we were becoming believers in the healing and special qualities of the air that locals espouse. Then, as we moved around the park, beautiful hillsides, unique local cattle grazing in rocky road-side hilly areas, just-harvested potato fields, made for a particularly relaxing and informative day. In and just outside of the park we enjoyed the local Sila potatoes, vegetables, cheese and breads. (Unusual for us as we seldom take time for food experiences.)

It is UNESCO tentative listed. We did not want to leave, and asked our guide to just keep taking us to more areas of the park.

Translucent, articulate, altiplano lakes and conifers and an uncrowded route. The St Giovanni is an unbalanced hard to grasp event, overgrown, busy, philistine, dramatic. However the scenery and the bluish of the National Park serves matters at their best.

This is a lovely Park and there are some wonderful walks taking in all the natural beauty. Wildlife is in abundance. You could spend hours exploring. One observation don't try and drive the complete circuit around the park by car as the roads/tracks are very treacherous. You should only attempt this if you have a 4x4.

Sila is a beautiful park in the middle of calabria with 3 lovely lakes. It is a perfect place to walk in the nature and eat in a small restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Please consider that there is not an "entrance": the park is a huge area of calabria and you can cross it as you prefer. There are several interesting places but, in general, you can find trekking paths everywhere.

If you like hiking this is a beautiful park especially at this time of the year. It also happened to be the mushroom festival and there are plenty in the forests and being sold in the markets.
Trees are changing colors and it is very scenic. The center has an explanation of the vegetation and geological development of the park in English and Italian.

Great place to visit if you enjoy nature and the out doors. I’ve been going for a number of years and enjoy cycling in the park. Food is also great with all local produce.

Around 65 kilometers of beautiful road with incredible views, a lot of camping areas and restaurants, bike friendly, lakes, forests and everything a nature lover might desire. One of the best surprises Italy offered us.

The beauty was unbelievable. We hiked all day with our Italian Cugino's ( cousins).. and had so many things to talk about in nature.

If you like the outdoors this is worth a visit when in the area.

It would be advisable to drive around the park first and then pick your starting point for a hike as there are several - this will allow you you get your bearings and choose what area you want to cover.

There are hikes to suit everyone from the light stroll to the hardcore 5hr all day job.

Strong shoes, water and some food are a must. There are toilets, a few cafes and spaces for barbecues.

The drive from Catanzaro lido to the national park is 1.5 hrs but allows you to take in some of southern Italys most breathtaking scenery, but leave early and ensure you have a GPS with road closure updates as the multiple mountain bridges and tunnels can be closed off with diversions through small mountain villages

If you want to do long treks this would be a wonderful place, in which case you need many, many hours. We were taken there on a tour for a couple of hours and were extremely disappointed because there was a lot of travel involved getting there and the Tourist Centre displays were very poor when compared with other similar places in many countries I have visited. We felt that very little care was taken with maintenance of the area; this attitude being apparent in many places in Calabria including the capital Conzenza. When you go into the neighbouring province of Apulia you immediately notice it is so much better maintained. Our Italian tour guide said it is typical of the easy-going attitude in Calabria.
