About
Award-winning 3-acre garden surrounding an 18th century Manor House and Grade I listed 16th century Tithe Barn. Bourton House Garden features luxuriant terraces and wide herbaceous borders with stunning plant, texture and colour combinations. Features include a topiary walk, a White Garden and several spring-fed water features including a raised basket pond from the Great Exhibition of 1851. You will also find a Shade House, colourful borders with unusual tender perennials and many creatively planted pots. A raised 18th century walk provides an enticing visual link to the Cotswold landscape beyond. Visitors to the garden are also invited to enjoy the walk in our seven-acre field (opened to the public in 2013) which meanders through groups of specimen trees planted in 1994/95. Beautiful to visit throughout the seasons, Bourton House Garden presents an especially magnificent late summer flourish when many gardens run their course.

- Lee GBampton, United Kingdom95 contributionsMore on offer than it's size suggests! We were looking for a garden to visit to use our '2for1' Gardens card and perhaps somewhere a little different. Bourton House Garden caught our attention due to it's location and how the garden was described. The description did not disappoint. Finding the location is easy with a Satnav and as you get near signposted. Parking is on the opposite side of the road and there was ample space. You walk across the road and pay entry at the beautiful Tithe Barn and then wander round. Considering it was October it really did not disappoint. With so much still in flower and a stunning layout. it was one of the warm October days but still! Sitting in the Orchard area and just listening to the wind blow through the trees was simply a very tranquil and relaxing site. There are a number of different areas with the overall gardens. All with something different to offer. Despite being quite a compact house garden, it doesn't feel it. There is plenty of room to move around and different areas if one gets busy and moving between them is very easy. The only sad piece, and beyond everyone's control, is box blight has devastated some of the beautiful topiary that can be seen in the guides. However, it has been replaced with what looked like yew so looking at a positive it will be interesting to watch how this grows as it matures. There are toilets on site and before October there is a fully set up cafe inside the Tithe Barn, but this was closed when we went so cannot comment. However, they had put a pop up cafe on site so we were still able to get a brew and gorgeous home made cake. Simply fantastic. We ended the day with a wander round the field that is attached to the car park and is part of the land owned by the house. It has some fantastic trees and a guide is given on arrival to tell you all about them. It is a grassed path around the field. Overall this was just a lovely few hours spent in a beautiful location. The gardeners at the house have a fantastic eye with each area offering something different while all having a running theme as you move through. Seeing it in the different seasons is something we look forward to.Hi Many thanks or your lovely review of our garden. As you say, it was very sad for us all when we had to finally give in and remove some of the box hedging, but Jacky and the team have used this as an opportunity to try new things which are already adding new interest to the garden. We will look forward to welcoming you back soon.Written 25 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- Lisa HCambridge, United Kingdom56 contributionsStunning house & gardens !We visited the gardens here and were stunned. Meticulously maintained and beautifully laid out, they were such a joy to wander around and I'm sure will be even better as we head into summer. We loved every aspect of it and wish we had had more time and better weather to appreciate it for longer. Would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.Thank you for your lovely comments. We are so pleased you enjoyed the garden, and as you mention the garden is now full of interesting plants and lots of colour. - Janet H34 contributionsA beautiful garden , well worth a visitBeautiful garden , immaculately cared for and full of stunning plants including many unusual varieties and exotics, we particularly enjoyed the planting of succulents such as Aeoniums and Echeverias , in the borders and pots . The themed white garden was a highlight as was the vegetable garden. Many congratulations to the gardeners for providing us with such a feast for the eyes. Refreshments are available in the tithe barn, the home made cakes were superb. There is a small plant sales area with some unusual ones available , I managed to fill the car with many new treasures!Thank you so much for your wonderful review. - Steve GreenCheltenham, United Kingdom122 contributionsThe bench-mark of Cotswold Summer gardens. This must be the bench-mark of Summer seasonal gardens n the Cotswolds and there some rather good competitors. Everything is so neat and tidy, the borders are full of colour and interest. Our visit on a rather mixed weather day did not spoil our enjoyment. Friendly staff and good selection of tea and snacks on offer. Good parking facilities. Can’t fault it. A guarantee of enjoyment in my opinion. Highly Recommend. We used our BBC Gardeners World Magazine 2 for 1 voucher which made our visit a BARGAIN!Many thanks for your lovely review. - niinan2Nurmijarvi, Finland1,787 contributionsAmazing gardenI had cream tea at the Bourton House Garden before visiting the amazing garden. There is lots to see in the garden; many different kind of areas around; don't know what is behind the next hedge. Nice view to the adjacent field/surroundings. Would be lovely to spend a summer day in a shade of a large tree reading book. Lots of plants; some of them have already bloomed but most was in full bloom.Thank you for your review. - Mary O9 contributionsA real hidden gemThis is a real hidden gem - right from the entrance to the Great Barn, flanked by the largest hanging baskets we've ever seen, the lovely welcome, and the most amazingly stunning gardens we've ever visited. You can tell they have been created by extremely knowledgeable and talented gardeners. The 'White Garden' is just awesome! Very helpful and lovely staff in the Tea Room, with delicious sandwiches and cakes. Would definitely go again at a different time of year tooMany thanks for your lovely review. Visited here on a whim as we were passing and so glad we did.
It’s a lovely garden with beautiful borders - someone really knows how to use colour. Even with the challenges of lockdown and the rain, the borders looked great and well kept. There are different areas to see and although it’s not huge, it’s worth a visit.
The cafe had lovely food - simple sandwiches and homemade soup which were delicious and they even warmed the bowls!
Across the road is a short walk showing off a collection of trees.

This is without doubt one of the best gardens we have visited and we've done a few including many of the more popular gardens around the Cotswolds.
Immaculately maintained and although August can be a difficult time in the gardening calendar, with many plants past their best, there was colour everywhere. Visitor numbers seem manageable and this makes looking around the gardens so much more relaxing.
The weather wasn't the best at the time of our visit but even this didn't spoil our experience, we will definitely be back to see what the gardens have to offer at a different time of the year.

Situated in the Cotswolds these gardens which cover some three acres are a real gem. Beautifully kept and with stunning plants providing a kaleidoscope of colours, this is a must if in the area. Among the many features are a knot garden and topiary displays. Large free car park, cafe and gift shop (limited access during Covid restrictions). Check website for opening. Adjacent field walk featuring different species of tree.

Pleasant gardens on a fairly compact site with distinct areas focused on colour - substantial amount in flower on an August day living up to the advertised promise of it being good in the summer. Lawned area for light lunches and drinks. In an area with other gardens to allow a full days viewing such as Batsford and Sezincote

This was a beautiful garden to visit, with various borders and spaces. We were happy to take advantage of the half price ticket offer for having visited Batsford Arboretum before, but they also accept the Gardener's World 2 for 1 card. We had pleasant tea in the garden, and the gardeners were chatty and friendly as we walked around. We were a little surprised it wasn't bigger, but had a pleasant hour there.

A wonderful visit to glorious gardens with really well planned out borders it was an absolute delight. There were so many plants and displays to admire. I hope to get back again towards the end of the Summer. There is a cafe serving great homemade cakes and light lunches. My only disappointment was the coffee. Please install a coffee machine. I know of three couples who did not buy anything as there was no real coffee. Latte please. It would be great to get a small discount on the Garden visit 2 for 1 on the solo side please as some other garden venues offer.

Perhaps our favourite garden in the area. An amazing display of box topiary scattered around the varied gardens each maintained to the highest standards. Well chosen plants thrive in the sunny borders bringing inspiration to the enthusiastic gardener. The tea room is filled with character and choice of local cakes.

I honestly think this is the most beautiful garden I’ve ever visited. The views are amazing. What makes this garden special is the attention to detail - you can tell that the gardeners have put so much effort into every inch of the garden. Everyone who worked there was very friendly, and the cakes were all delicious.

Is there a regular bus that travels to Bourton House Garden from Moreton-in-Marsh station? Do we need to book a bus transport?
Written 10 March 2020
In think there might be a bus service from Morton In Marsh . But we had our car and drove to Burton House. However if all else fails there is a taxi service in the town which is not far.

An accessibility question - are there many steps to negotiate ? My husband has limited mobility and climbing steps is an issue, although we would love to visit!

Hello. You will be able to access the garden by going though the gate next to the potting shed. This way you will avoid the steps. There are a couple of steps to go on to the lawn in front of the house.

Moreton-in-Marsh, United Kingdom
Hi Lynn - sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I've never had a question via Trip Advisor before and was not familiar with the process. Only just found your question. There are seats in various places in the garden where you could stop and rest. Whether the distances involved between them would be OK for you, I do not know. For instance, there is seating behind the Tithe Barn entrance, then up some steps into White Garden and borders. When you get to main lawn, there is a garden table and chairs behind house, also seat on terrace. Following on from knot garden, there is a bench on croquet lawn. Whether this is enough for you, I don't know. If you decide to visit, I hope you enjoy the garden. Please ask our staff if you require any assistance. Also our gardeners are very helpful. Best wishes Christine Walford, Administrator
