    Fantastic and fully accessible
Late review here as I forgot but this was our 2nd year running on the Xmas train from grosmont. They have made the station really accessible considering it’s age. Every single member of staff could not be more helpful. I booked the accessible car as I use a mobility scooter. What I love about this is that the train haas a fully accessible toilet and space so if I want to stay seated in my scooter I can or if I want to transfer to a seat I can easily which is what I do. The experience is great, best toys for the kids ever and Santa is great. Can’t wait to go again as it’s now our new tradition as a family. Thank you for making it all so inclusive.
Thank you for a brilliant review. We're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your trip on our Santa Special and we'll look forward to seeing you again this year. Happy Christmas!

    Interesting, informative and bustling
Got the train for the short trip from Goathland to Grosmont and very glad we did. The station is extremely well maintained with great features. Semaphore signalling, a traditional level crossing closing the road when the trains are arriving / departing and historic little touches everywhere. A short walk through the tunnel takes you to the engine sheds where you can see the engines being worked on close-up. Very interesting and no charge to take a look around. A great little shop as well full of railway memorabilia. Helpful staff on hand everywhere - and a more than adequate refreshment room on the platform. What particularly surprised me was the sheer volume of trains coming and going - always something happening and was a joy to see and be taken back to days gone by. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.
Thank you so much for a lovely review. It sounds as if you really made the most of your visit to the NYMR. We hope to see you again.

    Superb!
Exemplary! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. So smart and professional. The station itself is very well kept and an absolute pleasure to sit on the platform, watching the comings and goings of the trains and steam engines. Killed a few hours in a lovely setting but could hand stayed all day. Thank you.

    Pullman dining at its best
We had the full Pullman experience, three course meal, bottle of wine and a pretrip glass of Prosecco. We had a private compartment in the carriage with luxurious seating. Our meal consisted of a starter of Yorkshire foods built like an afternoon tea, followed by roast lamb, Yorkshire pudding veg and new potatoes. The choice of desserts was either cheese and biscuits or trio of desserts. All the food was excellent and the service was sublime. It was a rainy day but it didn't dampen our spirits at all.
Thank you for a brilliant review of the Pullman Dining Experience - we're very pleased to hear that you had such a great time and we hope to see you again.

    Travelling back to the past
We took the Whitby NYMR train on a single station journey which saw us alighting here at Grosmont. A real gem which brought back memories of what it was like with rail travel back in the 50s - 60s. Lovely little station with plenty of buzz due to all the engines moving around. Very picturesque.
Thank you for a great review of Grosmont Station - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again.

Lucky to catch this 2024 Santa Special in the rain today with Black 5 Eric Tracey brightening up a wet day. Unusually I was the only person on the viewing stage

I love Grosmont Station. It is very pretty, always well turned out and has really long platforms. There is a lovely cafe, though not big enough particularly in inclement weather and at busy times. Similarly, the waiting area is also small for when the weather is bad. Parking has been an issue in the past, though we have been fortunate on our last two visits. The biggest problem is the disabled toilet facilities.

Currently there is a disabled toilet in the gents and similarly in the ladies. To reach these you have to cross a tiled floor, which is normally wet and slippery. If you have a stick or crutches, the rubber bottoms tend to slide and can be lethal on wet, slippery floors, as you are relying on these aids to support your weight. You cannot get in and out of the gents, if someone is standing at the urinal next to the door. I have had to tread gingerly there and back many times. The last time that I was using the toilet, a man on crutches slipped and fell on the wet floor. It is a good job that there were other people there to rescue him. It should also be born in mind, that many disabled people need assistance with using the toilet. It would be inappropriate to take my wife through the gents, whilst the other chaps are stood there having a pee.

The solution is to have a separate disabled toilet for both men, women and any other denomination, accessible by radar key. This would be perfect for all disabilities and reduce the risk of injury and a possible damages claim. It also keeps the dignity of others intact as carers of a different gender, don't have to walk through their toilets. I realise that achieving this would involve a bit of rearranging and some expense but in the long run, it would bring the station up to date and potentially save money overall.

The station is looking particularly good at the moment. We went for the evening Pullman Dining train, to celebrate Yorkshire Day and the 50th Anniversary of the railway on Friday 28th July. We thought that it would be a pleasant change from the lunchtime service and we were correct in thinking that we would have a much better chance of getting a disabled parking space.

We arrived one hour early but by the time we had taken a comfort break and walked round to the opposite platform, where our train was waiting; we didn't have long to wait before boarding and taking our comfortable seats. Everyone received a glass of fizz on boarding and under the linen napkins was a commemorative Yorkshire rose pin badge, as a souvenir for each person to keep.

We had a mixed, sharing platter of Yorkshire produce to start with. We had both chosen the Lamb with roast and new potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a selection of vegetables, mint sauce and gravy in a separate boat. The Lamb just melted in your mouth. A trio of deserts followed; Yorkshire curd tart, rhubarb fool and Yorkshire parkin. Coffee and a duo of handmade chocolates ended a delicious meal. As the evening grew darker and the carriage lights came on, it made the whole atmosphere more romantic and brought about a certain nostalgia of bygone days, when this type of rail travel was the norm.

I would like to all the staff from the station staff, engine crew and all the people who looked after us throughout our journey, including the chefs who produced a fabulous meal. When we finally alighted, Grosmont Station looked equally romantic in the glow of the old fashioned lights. Looking forward to next time.
