Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Anyone interested in the painter Otto Dix will get their money's worth here. There is not only a great deal on offer in terms of content. It is also very well represented.
The audio guide conveys a lot of knowledge if you want or just the basics. That is up to each visitor.
The house has been very lovingly renovated and offers a beautiful view over Lake Constance. The life of the Dix family is illustrated very vividly here and you can imagine what it was like then.

Otto Dix was one of Germany's most important 20th century whose work started in the expressionist style and evolved into a harshly realistic style. His service in World Wars One and Two had a profound impact on his work. Here his home overlooking an arm of Lake Constance was his studio. There are reproductions of many of his most famous pieces here and one or two originals on loan from the main Stuttgart art museum. However, anyone interested in the extraordinary life of this genius will find a visit here most enlightening. Throughout is home are small scenes in black and white which you point a smart phone at and then you get an oral commentary about Dix's art, his family life and the influences that drove his creative process. One of his grandchildren provides fascinating commentary on the artist himself. The commentary is in German, and I do not know if an English version is available. However, if you understand German to a reasonable degree, the commentary is not only interesting but quite easy to follow.

This is a lovely house overlooking Lake Constance, prime real estate now and also when Otto Dix acquired it. I found it hard to imagine this amazing and courageous artist creating the disturbing works for which he is known in this tranquil setting. The fact is that he didn't. He moved here in the mid-1930s, already sidelined by the Nazis, and created mainly non-offensive landscapes. A few remain in the house. But there are no great works by the artist currently in the house, these are now all in major German museums. In some ways Dix took refuge here during the darkest years of National Socialism, but his artistic voice was not entirely silenced. If you are in the region, it is very worthwhile to make a detour to get this fascinating glimpse into the live of one of Germany's great 20th-century artists.

Superb site very poorly indicated
No point if you don't know German. No translation offered, either in French or English.
The receptionist could perhaps have offered an audio guide but we were unable to find out if one was available in a language other than German.

For handicapped this is a minus 2. 3 floors many difficult steps.. The number of real pictures from Dix are so few that I thought it just was not worth it. The history and audio were good. The café was helpful and it has a great view of the Boden See.

This museum is well worth taking the trouble to search out, as it gives a really good insight into the life of Otto Dix and his time in this house. The house is absolutely beautiful and in a superb setting. It's interesting that Dix painted so much of the "gritty" side of life while living in such a beautiful and peaceful setting. The museum is really well cared for and imaginative in its presentation - I particularly liked the i-phones used to give details of particular rooms and objects. The museum is really geared for German speakers but the gentleman behind the information desk was really friendly and helpful and made a particular effort to dig out some English language material for my wife. Really this was a great pleasure to visit and I would highly recommend stopping to do so.
