Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just stunning. Combine a day trip that covers the Rock of Guatapé, El Peñol, or El Peñón de Guatapé, Laguna Guatapé and the town itself, Guatapé. Really breathtaking and makes a nice day trip from Medellin.

A most interesting excursion but neither for the colourful town, nor for the Peniol pilgrimage. The artificial and man made flooded events have an extra long haul towards the dam itself which proved to us inaccessible. The post tourist itinerary was irresiistible leading to a Rio Grande reserve. Follow that ignoring the tourist trail. The Guatape Church is interesting if it can be read properly.

Guatape is a stunning town, such beautiful ivibrant colours. The dam has created a lovely landscape of lakes and islands that are extremely pleasing on the eye.
You can enjoy water based trips on the many pleasure boat options or see it from on high by climbing El Penol rock.
Make sure to leave plenty of time to explore the gorgeous town too though.

Small colorful town which is great for photos but is so overtaken by tourism and we forget that this is where other people live. It's beautiful with all the stories painted in the tiles. Also there are stray dogs everywhere but they seem to be fed and well taking care of. I'm a pet lover so I felt in heaven.Wishing I would had more time to explore.

The area in general is nice, but there is mediocre management of everything. Lots of trash and dirt everywhere.

The Dam definitely created one of the most spectacular views all around. That's especially true of you're hiking all the way atop the Big Rock! There are countless of Lake that were created because of that, and the area is just beautiful!

We rented a driver and car from Medellin and travelled the 49 miles from the city in total comfort to view the 25 sq miles of lakes made by the Guatape Dam. The dam was constructed in the 1970s by the Empresas Públicas de Medellín as part of a large hydroelectric complex to supply electricity to Medellin. Many farms and small communities were lost under the raising water of the reservoir. Our first stop was at Parque Temático Réplica del Viejo Peñol, were a duplicate copy of the village church has been reconstructed along with lots of tourist souvenir shops. There is a viewing point of the dams water foot print, and on a clear day you can see the cross on top of the original villages submerged church steeple.
Our next stop to view the dams reservoir was the large rock called El Peñon de Guatapé, the view from the top is fantastic, but for the less agile the viewing platform by the statue of Don Luis Eduardo Villegas Lopez, the first person to climb the rock is pretty impressive too. If you are in need of sustenance there are quite a few restaurants that can provide food and drink while you enjoy the view of the massive reservoir in comfort. We did not have time to rent a boat and check out all the superb waterside villas of wealthy people from Medellín, including the likes of famous sportsmen, and even Pablo Escobar's old house.
Our final stop and last viewing of the dam’s waters was at colourful village of Guatape, with its famous zocalos (baseboards) on many of the buildings.

TIP: It is faster and easier to have a guide, as there is so much to see and parts can be easily missed.

Virtually any photo you take of the surrounding landscape from the top of La Piedra will be glorious.

A very nice maze made by the lake that is a pleasure for the eyes. Wealthy people from Medellín who have superb villas on the shore seem to agree with that. Best appreciated from the penol.
