The zocalos, large tiles on building fronts are the best part of Guatape. You might even see Nacho, the zocalo builder. Some tiles are intricate, some are simple, all are colorful, photogenic and emblematic of the occupants of the home or business.

Yes it is touristy but what a pretty town. The colours and atmosphere on a Sunday. Loved it. Browse, take photographs, get a bite to eat or have a drink and then get lost in the pretty streets. Explore! Easy to navigate. The town is very small.

This town is beautiful, and has many tourists during the day. Wander away from the main clauses to see the smaller alleyways and escape the crowds, just as colorful and beautiful. This is a great way to spend half a day.

Spend a wonderful day at the Plaza. Friendly locals and plenty of local foods to try. Did some shopping at the local shops and spent some time at an art Studio.

Guatape is a gem, ir really is. We just could not believe the vibrant colours and the beautiful stone Zocalos on the lower walls. Every building had different ones and they seemed to complete to be the most colourful. This plaza is in the heart of it all. Definitely the most beautiful of the many gorgeous little towns we visited in Colombia.

A brightly colored small, pedestrian square, surrounded by shops & restaurants. Be sure to check out the chocolate store, the best chocolate in Colombia BY FAR!

Area is so colorful and well maintained. Shops are fun, artisanal ice-cream was delicious! Picture opportunities were great! Perfect compliment to Piedra del Penol!

After visiting El Penol in the early morning we decided to stop by the colourful village of Guatape nestling on the shores of the sprawling reservoir and have lunch. The El Portal Restaurant is a handy place to park when visiting the town with all its colourful zocalos and is a good place to eat. The village is very popular with tourists’ groups visiting the area, who come to wander around the colorful cobblestone streets with its painted houses and the placard borders called Zocalos. Which are painted in themes or tributes, to a milk farmer, family dog, Minnie Mouse and countless other objects, including renditions of the La Piedra del Peñol. To get to the Main Plaza and the Church, we climb up a flight of steps, each one painted in a different color, yellow, blue, red, green.

TIP: In the height of the tourist season the village is over run with people, so explore the less busy side streets.
