Last week, my friend and I took a leisurely walk around (Seebli) as the Hoch-Ybrig Laucheren chairlifts started operation in early July. Although the sky was overcast, I took a few photos of the reflection on the lake. I was a little surprised by the results of the landscapes reflection. May be the weather will be better next time and I can take a perfect reflection photos.

The blue slopes were more difficult than in other resorts I've seen (Villars, Grindelwald, Scuol). In fact they were even more challenging than the red slopes in the nearby ski resort, Brunni-Alpthal. Therefore, I can recommend Hoch-Ybring for experienced skiers. For those who want to build confidence on easy slopes, Brunni or Flumserberg would be better.

Worst ski area i have visited in a long time.
Infrastructure cant cope with the amount of people. 80 minutes queue to get up and 60 min queue to get down. 40 min queue at the self service Restaurant.

After 20 years of absence, I decided to give Hoch-Ybrig another chance and went there for a day trip with my partner and my kids...and was pretty disappointed.

Only a 50 minutes drive away from Zürich, a lot of visitors are to be expected on a typical sunny winter’s day. The problem is, in contrast to other ski resorts, the facilities at Hoch-Ybrig cannot cope with too many people.

The parking deck is faulty by design - not sure who thought it’s a good idea to mount thrash bins at the top of each of the narrow ramps, but searching for a free spot to park in the very confined space among hundreds of people unloading their equipment is very likely to leave you stressed out even before the day has really begun.

But fear not, you will have plenty of time to cool down: expect waiting times between 90mins and two hours to get by cable car from the parking lot up to the mountain. Then you can finally queue up for the chair lift...

Signage is generally bad. There’s a map of the lifts at the cable car station. Afterwards, you are pretty much on your own, especially at crossroads on the slope.

Slopes were prepared rather sloppy and their difficulty rating way off. I am a good skier and had no problems, but was scratching my head. My eight year old daughter was pretty challenged with runs that were marked as “blue” (lowest difficulty). In other resorts, red slopes posed no real difficulties for her. I had the sneaking suspicion that the slopes were downrated to appeal to the broader masses...after the first downhill with my older daughter, I therefore decided to refrain from bringing my younger one (6 years) all the way to the top. She had to be content with the two beginner lifts, which are really boring. One is a “magic carpet” type, about 5 meters in length, the other a rope that you need to grapple. The pull is pretty rough, but will get you about 50 meters up the hill.

In summary, if you’re an absolute beginner or a decent skier/snowboarder, the slopes at Hoch-Ybrig might be something for you. Everyone in between will be either over- or underwhelmed.

We had lunch at the self-service restaurant next to the cable car station. Although it was almost 2pm, people were queuing up outside, waiting times were therefore about 30mins to place an order. My meal was ok, but expensive (21 CHF for two small Schnitzels with french fries).

We had a nice hike to see both sides of the mountain. Even though it was mostly a gray day with a bit of rain the view was still beautiful. Then I did their zip line which was great fun. You can get up to 70 mph in the first of 2 legs. I believe the full run was the longest in the world until recently. It was well run.

I went on a friday afternoon to hoch ybrig to ride the known Sternsauser zipline.
When arriving in the valley aerial cable car station it was like I was the only one there. Had a huge gondola for myself alone on the way up. Next I took the chairlift to the starting point of the zipline. At 13:30 the operators arrived and opened the attraction, then they gave the instructions how to ride. There was no waiting in line, even though the weather was perfect. They are very friendly and seem enjoying their job (before somebody rides it, the operator rides down to the finish to await the rider. If you got a backpack you can put it on one of the hooks on the chairlift to transport it down. The zipline goes over a large treeless field, which is in winter a ski slope, then over a forest before the middle section. For me it was worth the 70chfr to ride the zipline, it is just awesome. It is great for people who want a good thrill at a quiet and calm place without mass tourism in summer. The Resort Hoch Ybrig is more known for snow sports.

Unplanned, we had a free day and got the recommendation from the salesmen in a mobile telephone store outside of Zurich. We loved the drive there, the cable car, chair lift, and breathtaking views. Weather was perfect and nearly had the place to ourselves.

Staff was friendly and helpful. We had a picnic at the summit and hiked a bit too. Air was so clean and you could see for many many miles.

Bring a jacket, even in late summer.

Would go again.

Once you are up with the cable ways, the region invites to beautiful hikes through forests and above. Can also recommend for mountain biking, and there are different places to have a bite, relax and enjoy the views. The highlight is the Sternensauser, the longest Flying Fox in the world. Let you fly down the mountain, 1.8km long. straight line, more than 100km/h speed. Woooooshhh!

I visited Hoch Ybrig with my 11 year old son and had a really good time. They cater for beginners and experienced skiers alike and the views from the cable car are fabulous. We stayed in Zürich and Hoch Ybrig was only about 40 mins drive from the city which was ideal for us. I would certainly visit here again the next time I'm in Switzerland.
