I love steam trains, in fact I live everything to do with preserved railways and Goathland has it all. But what was particularly special on our brief visit was that we could walk into the platforms, even though the station was “closed”. And, as the...More

If you haven’t arrived by train it is still worth the walk downhill to see it. Old style preserved of course and lots of interest. Good foot bridge to scan the rail lines up and down. Well worth a visit.

Travelling between Scarborough and Whitby we've often seen the road sign for Goathland - and travelling by train on one of the most beautiful lines in the country we even passed through once. This time though we made a point of visiting what has been...More

Although the trains were not running we paid a visit to see the great buildings covered in snow and it gave a great atmospheric feel to the place

Travelled up to and back to Whitby on this line. Cold and wet .. well it was Autumn. The volunteer staff at the station were great with their knowledge and humour ... you do not have to travel on the train but a visit to...More

Randomly came across this as talking about steam trains and was blown away to know that Harry Potter was actually filmed here! Definitely worth the visit as it is so magical

Unexpectedly found myself and family catching the train from Goathland to Grosmont and back again. A very reasonable £24 for two adults and two teens and beautiful scenery on this short trip. I fully expected the trains to be out of service during the winter...More

Meandering onto this railway station, the scene of both Harry Potter and Heartbeat was nostalgic, not a soul in sight but spotlessly clean. Nothing to do as trains do not run this time of year but lovely to see. Will revisit when the steam trains...More

You will all get onto the station easily and there is a coach and car park nearby. I don’t know about the cafe booking

Hi Can you let me know if I can book a short steam train journey from Goathland to Whitby Bay? If so, how much will it cost and can we get a return ticket? It's for a special occasion for my mum who has never been to Whitby bay before or on a steam train so I thought for a fantastic day out, we could spend a short amount of time of steam train to Whitby bay and then spend most of our day at Whitby bay, then at around 5pm get the steam train back from Whitby bay to Goathland train station where we can collect our car and drive home back to Manchester. We want to experience the steam train but not spend the majority of our day on it because the main highlight for mum will be spent at Whitby bay and we only have 1 day to do this which is Sat 2 June mum's birthday. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks Scott
